The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will tip-off the 100th year of basketball at the school in 2010-11 with three consecutive home games against teams that posted 20+ victories a year ago, it was announced today.
Tulsa will face some new opponents (Appalachian State, Princeton and Weber State), but will renew and continue some old rivalries (Wichita State, OSU, TCU, ORU and Missouri State) as the school revealed its' non-conference schedule for the 2010-11 campaign. Six of Tulsa's seven non-league home opponents posted at least 20 wins last year.
"We feel really good about our non-conference schedule. Of our 11 definite opponents, eight won 20 or more games a year ago and six of those teams finished the season among the top-100 in the RPI ratings," said Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik. "In addition, we'll have an opportunity to possibly play three more teams - Murray State, UNLV and Virginia Tech - ranked among the top-60 in the RPI at the 76 Classic in November."
"This is an exciting schedule for our team and our fans as we celebrate the great tradition in our 100th season of basketball at TU," added Wojcik.
The Hurricane will tip-off the regular season on Friday, November 12th against first-time opponent Appalachian State and new coach Jason Capel. The Mountaineers posted a 24-13 record and won the South Division of the Southern Conference last season. Tulsa and ASU played one common opponent a year ago, Marshall, as Tulsa posted a 2-1 record against the Thundering Herd and the Mountaineers won the only meeting.
For the second straight year, Tulsa will be a part of ESPN's "24 Hours of Basketball". This year, the Hurricane will play cross-town rival Oral Roberts (20-13) at 11 am on Tuesday, Nov. 16th. Tulsa has won the last two meetings, including a 57-52 victory last year at the Mabee Center, and has a 30-16 advantage in the series.
The third straight home game to start the season comes against Missouri State. The Bears, 24-12 and champions of the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament a year ago, come to town on Friday, Nov. 19th, to close out the three-game home-stand for the Hurricane.
Tulsa will then go west for the Fourth Annual 76 Classic in Anaheim, California, over the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25-28. The tournament features five post-season tournament teams from a year ago, including three NCAA teams and two NIT squads. The field includes UNLV (25-9, NCAA), Virginia Tech (25-9, NIT), Oklahoma State (22-11, NCAA), Murray State (31-5, NCAA), Tulsa (23-12, NIT), DePaul (8-23), Stanford (14-18) and Cal State Northridge (11-21). Three games will be played over four days (Nov. 25, 26 and 28th) at the 7,500-seat Anaheim Convention Center. All 12 games will be televised on the ESPN's family of networks.
A week later, Tulsa travels to Little Rock, Arkansas to face the UALR Trojans on December 5th. The Hurricane returns to Tulsa to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a neutral site game at the downtown BOK Center on Wednesday, Dec. 8th. Tulsa corralled the Cowboys last year at the Reynolds Center by a score of 86-65.
On Sunday, Dec. 12th, Tulsa will meet the Princeton Tigers for the first time in school history in a 1 pm match-up at the Reynolds Center. Princeton posted a 22-9 record last year and finished in second-place in the Ivy League. The Tigers have made 29 post-season tournament appearances in school history, including 23 times in the NCAA.
Tulsa will host 2010 Big Sky Conference Champion Weber State on Thursday, Dec. 16th. Weber State posted a 20-11 record lat year and finished the regular season in first place in the Big Sky with a 13-3 mark, but fell in the tournament championship game against Montana. Like the Hurricane, Weber State played in the NIT.
The Hurricane will renew its' longest rivalry in school history when Tulsa travels up I-35 to play Wichita State on Tuesday, Dec. 21st. This will be the 120th meeting between the two schools as Tulsa leads the series by one game, 60-59.
WSU is coming off of a 25-10 season that saw the Shockers finish in second-place in the Missouri Valley Conference and advance to the post-season NIT.
Tulsa will return for a home contest just before Christmas as the Hurricane plays host to Texas-San Antonio (19-11) on Thursday, Dec. 23rd. It will be the fourth meeting against the Roadrunners, as Tulsa leads the series 3-0.
After a six-day layoff for the Holidays, Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center for a match-up against former Western Athletic Conference rival, TCU. The Horned Frogs, now a member of the Mountain West Conference, posted a 13-19 mark last year. It's the first meeting between the two schools since the 2003-04 campaign, as Tulsa leads the series 19-10.
The final non-conference game will take the Hurricane to Tempe, Arizona, as Conference USA play would have already begun. The Hurricane will play the Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday, January 12th, for only the third time in school history. Tulsa leads the series 2-0 after capturing a 69-67 win in the 2000 season opener.
The Sun Devils posted a 22-11 mark last year and has made three straight post-season appearances.
Arizona State, Wichita State and UALR will return games to Tulsa in 2011-12, while the Hurricane will visit ORU, Oklahoma State, Missouri State and TCU next season.
The Conference USA schedule for all 12 league schools will be announced at a later date.

Formerly known as Kendall College, the basketball team played its' first game in 1907-08 (Tulsa did not field teams for four seasons). Tulsa has played 2,323 games in school history and has advanced to post-season play 26 times, while winning two NIT titles (1981 and 2001) and one CBI crown (2008).

Former Tulsa head basketball coach Tubby Smith may see his wallet get smaller. Smith, now the head coach at Minnesota has lost a lawsuit brought by former Oklahoma State assistant Jimmy Williams. The suit awards Williams nearly $1.25 million after Williams claimed Smith falsely represented that he had the authority to hire Williams when he called him in 2007 to talk about an assistant coach position in Minnesota. Williams claimed Smith offered him the job and that after that conversation, Williams resigned from his $200,000-a-year post at Oklahoma State.
But Minnesota officials backed away from Williams after athletic director Joel Maturi pointed out that Williams had NCAA recruiting violations in his past.
Williams' lawsuit, which also named the university as a defendant, was seeking $1.7 million in lost past and future income. Williams said Wednesday's verdict vindicates him and he hopes to return to coaching.
"I'm just happy right now that the jury saw that I was telling the truth, and now I can move on with my life and my career," Williams said. "Hopefully in the near future I'm going to be back doing what I love, and that's coaching."
He said his reputation had been damaged by the ordeal and the verdict was a step toward clearing his name. He hasn't held a coaching job since he quit Oklahoma State, and his attorney, Donald Chance Mark Jr., said Williams has been living off retirement funds.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Smith testified during the eight-day trial that he never finalized a job offer and didn't tell Williams to quit his job.
Mark Rotenberg, the university's general counsel, said in a statement Wednesday that Smith and Maturi did nothing wrong. "Refusing to hire Jimmy Williams was the right call, and the university stands behind these officials," he said.
"Tubby Smith has never had a single major violation in his 30-plus years of coaching, and he's never hired anyone with the history of multiple major NCAA violations like Jimmy Williams has. Under Joel Maturi, not a single Gophers coach has ever been hired with a record of major violations like Jimmy Williams has," Rotenberg said.
He called the award "extraordinary" and said the university would consider an appeal.
Two jurors who spoke to reporters after the verdict said there was a lot of discussion in the jury room about what a "reasonable person" would do and the standard practice in the industry. They said the decision was unanimous.
Juror Tracy Jackson said the jury studied the evidence, including e-mails between Smith, Maturi and other university staffers, as well as records of cell phone calls between Smith and Williams.
Juror Margaret Stearns said, "We all were pretty much in agreement based on the evidence."
University of Tulsa basketball student-athlete Glenn Andrews has been granted a medical hardship waiver for the 2009-10 season, school officials learned today from Conference USA.
Andrews suffered an anterior cruciate tear to his left knee in the spring of 2009, and missed all but two games of the 2009-10 season. Andrews played 14 minutes in two games last season and scored six points.
Andrews will be a red-shirt junior in 2010-11 and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
In his first two seasons, Andrews averaged 7.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. He has 26 career double-figure scoring games and has started 16 of 77 career contests. He had a career-best 24 points against SMU as a freshman in the 2007-08 season.
Tulsa returns seven lettermen for the 2010-11 campaign and welcomes two transfers, Scottie Haralson from Connecticut and D.J. Magley from Western Kentucky, both of whom will be eligible this season, as well as 6'10" red-shirt freshman Kodi Maduka.
The Hurricane also welcomes three true freshman -- 6'9" Blondy Baruti, 6'4" Jordan Clarkson and 6'4" Tim Peete.

But the Duke Blue Devils went on an 18-3 run to put the game in the bag, winning 70-52 on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Hello folks! Here are a few pictures from the night at Cameron Indoor. Let me explain the last picture. Coach K found out that my daughter Lindsey was on the trip. Lindsey had brain tumor surgery at Duke in December of 2008. One of the doctors who performed the surgery was Allan Friedman. Dr. Friedman and Coach K are close friends as Coach K is very involved at the medical center. Coach K invited Lindsey and I to meet with him after the game. He was incredibly gracious and kind. He hugged Lindsey several times and was VERY encouraging to her in her battle. He spent about ten minutes with us and they are ten minutes that Lindsey will never forget. I would certainly have rather Tulsa won the game but it was still very kind of Coach K to do what he did. Just a side note from the game. The best note of all came on Thursday about noon. We met with Lindsey's doctors here in Durham and they told her she could end her chemo treatments next week. God is good, and we're very blessed. Thanks for allowing me the personal side note and enjoy the pictures.

The coach that brought Tulsa basketball to greatness in the 1980s when his first team claimed the 1981 NIT Championship, and later went on to win an NCAA Championship at the University of Arkansas, Nolan Richardson will have a book signing at the Tulsa-UTEP basketball game on February 20th, at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Game time is 3:00 pm.
Richardson's book "40 Minutes of Hell... The Extraordinary Life of Nolan Richardson" by Rus Bradburd, hit newsstands on February 9th.
The game selected for the book signing at The University of Tulsa has significance with UTEP being where Richardson played collegiately and Tulsa being his first head coaching stop on the NCAA Division I level.
Books will be available for purchase at the TU-UTEP game and the book signing will take place in the concourse of the arena before the game. Gates open at 1:30 pm.
Richardson came to Tulsa in 1980 after leading his Texas Western Junior College team to a 37-0 record and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship.
At Tulsa, Richardson wasted little time in putting the Hurricane on the national college basketball map. With a group of junior college transfers, including four from Texas Western JC, the Hurricane defeated defending national champion and No. 8-ranked Louisville in the third game of the season, 68-60. A game later Tulsa defeated Oklahoma, 84-75, in Norman and followed that with a 72-69 victory over cross-town rival Oral Roberts.
His first team went on to post a 26-7 record and capture the NIT Championship with wins over Pan American, UTEP, South Alabama, West Virginia and an 86-84 overtime victory over Syracuse in Madison Square Garden to claim the title. Richardson's next team posted a 24-6 mark and became just the second team in school history to make the NCAA Tournament field, the first since 1955.
After a 19-12 record and NIT appearance in the 1982-83 season, Richardson's 1983-84 team compiled the best record in his tenure at Tulsa with a 27-4 mark and once again advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 1984-85, which would be his last at Tulsa before moving to coach at Arkansas, Richardson's team posted a 23-8 record and made the school's third NCAA appearance in the Richardson era.
Richardson and Bradburd will be signing copies of the book at Sam's Club, 4420 S. Sheridan, from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. They will be in the upper concourse of the Reynolds Center immediately after that, signing books from 1:30 p.m. until game time of the Tulsa-UTEP game.

And big because both teams are......well......big. Once again C-USA's two premiere 7-footers will meet as Tulsa's Jerome Jordan will battle freshman Hassan Whiteside.
But before we get to the action, how about a look at how TU got to Huntington and a look around the Cam Henderson Center.
Remember, the game comes up at 5:30 with a 6:00 tip off on KRMG.
When you travel with a basketball or football team, you can have a great time. Neat cities, cool arenas and intense competition and just a few of the things you can count on. What you can't always count on, is where you will do your job. While on the road, I do morning sports and other work from wherever the team might be. Wednesday, February 17th found us in Huntington, W.V. at the Pullman Plaza Hotel.
The Hotel staff is amazing, helpful and friendly. So I won't hold it against them that we had to broadcast today from a closet. The proof is below!

Biles averaged 31.1 points as a member of the freshman team in 1970-71. He played in just 13 games as a sophomore, but burst onto the national scene a year later as one of the most prolific scorers in Tulsa history.
The 6-foot, 3-inch guard averaged 30.3 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior in 1972-73, and tallied 24.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in his senior season. Biles was the MVC's scoring leader both as a junior and senior, and also became the first player since Oscar Robertson to averaged 30 points a game for a single season. He scored a school record 48 points twice in his career and also tallied a single-season school record 788 points during his junior campaign.
The stat line for Biles in his two career-high scoring games of 48 points included 16-of-33 field goals and 16-of-17 free throws against MVC rival Wichita State on March 3, 1973, and 18-of-36 field goals and 12-of-17 free throws against St. Cloud State on Dec, 13, 1973
Biles was a two-time All-American and two-time first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference selection. He led the Hurricane to two consecutive 18-8 seasons, and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors.
Biles was inducted into the TU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. He played his prep basketball at Memphis' Pisgah High School.

Elijah Millsap had 19 points and 12 rebounds and helped pull No. 25 UAB out of a lengthy offensive funk and lead the Blazers to a 65-55 victory over Tulsa on Tuesday night.
The Blazers (18-2, 6-0 Conference USA) blew a 16-point halftime cushion but rebounded from a 12-minute span without a basket in time to survive a matchup of the only two remaining C-USA teams without a league loss.
Millsap broke that frigid spell with a basket and free throw with 6:16 left to halt a 19-2 run that had given the Golden Hurricane (16-4, 5-1) a 46-44 lead. Then he added a one-handed fastbreak dunk off a bounce pass from Aaron Johnson a minute later and was fouled then, too.
UAB senior George Drake hit eight-straight free throws in the final 5:39 and finished with 17 points. The Blazers made their first 16 attempts from the foul line after halftime to hold on when the jump shots stopped falling. Check here to hear coach Wojcik's postgame interview with Rick Couri.
Jamarr Sanders added 12 points for the Blazers, who went 19-of-20 from the line in the second half.
They shot 55 percent to take a 38-22 halftime lead, but made just 4 of 19 attempts after that (21 percent).
Jerome Jordan led Tulsa with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ben Uzoh added 17 points and made all three of the Golden Hurricane's 3-pointers. No. 2 scorer Justin Hurtt missed all seven field goal attempts and finished with two points, nearly 13 below his season average.
Tulsa shot 38 percent and had 17 turnovers, 14 in the first half.
After briefly taking the lead, the Golden Hurricane didn't manage another basket until UAB had already put the game out of reach with a 16-4 run.
The Blazers have won seven straight games and finished with a more comfortable win after the last three had come by a total of four points in the school's best start. They re-entered the Top 25 this week for the second time this season, having quickly lost to Virginia after that first appearance.

This one didn't come without a scare. Bishop Wheatley scooped up a loose ball under the basket for a layup, his only basket of the game, for a 46-44 lead with 6:31 left.
Millsap's answering drive ended an 11:57 drought without a field goal. UAB scored just six points in the first 13 minutes of the second half and made one of their first 15 shots.
Tulsa was off to its best start since going 29-3 on its way to a run to the round of eight in the NCAA tournament in the 1999-2000 season.
