T-P-S spokeswoman Tami Marler says thieves hit four different school sites in north and east Tulsa since school let out in June."They have stolen or damaged dozens of units and made a huge financial impact on the district. You are talking about $80,000 and that is the equivalent of two teachers, so it is like stealing teachers from the classroom," says Marler.
She says the units are industrial units and some are even on top of the schools. At Burroughs Elementary School, 1924 N. Cincinnati Avenue, thieves took 13 units. The bandits have also destroyed 7 units ar McKinley Elementary while trying to steal copper tubing.
And Marler says two more sites were hit in the past six weeks.
"And Tulsa Public Schools is ripe for the picking because we have 1,300 of these units throughout the city. So, if these thieves keep going unchecked- they could get very rich and we could lose quite a lot. That is why we really want the public to help keep their eyes and ears on our schools."
T-P-S wants the public to be aware of the problem and to call 9-1-1 if you see suspicious activity or CrimeStoppers at 596-C-O-P-S if you have information on the crimes.

TULSA, Ok. - Tulsa has recorded 24 homicides to this point in 2010. That's good news when you compare it to 34 that were recorded by this time last year. The FBI says 1,180 people have been murdered in Tulsa in the past 30 years and 957 of those homicides have been solved, which is 20% above the national average. Tulsa Police Homicide Sergeant Mike Huff says in all but a few cases, the killings have one thing in common. Huff says, "Most people know the person that killed them." He says homicides are harder to solve these days because criminals are smarter about crime scene evidence and sometimes pick up shell casings. Plus, he says people are more reluctant to get involved as witnesses than they were 10-15 years ago.

The jury also is calling for more investigation into the owners of E&E Sales, the company that sold the school district over-priced janitorial supplies and other items and triggered this investigation. This is presumably what Skiatook's residents wanted when they signed the petition to get the grand jury. (Skiatook School Board photo courtesy KOTV)

TULSA, Ok. - Turns out, there are more Tulsa Police Department retirements and resignations than officials expected. The force is down more than 150 officers after 92 layoffs and 61 retiring officers are not replaced in the last year and that could mean a delay getting an officer out to help crime victims. Deputy Tulsa Police Chief Daryl Webster says, "Higher case loads. It takes longer to work a case and as I'm sure you know, the longer it takes you to begin working a case and the longer you have to work a case, the more difficult it is to bring it to a successful resolution." Webster says no new officers are being recruited and a year from now, more officers could be taking retirement.

TULSA, Ok. - There's been no shortage of shootings in Tulsa lately. Bullets flying again last night, this time it was near 51st and South Sheridan. Police say a man pulled his pickup truck over when he suddenly realized he'd been shot. Tulsa Police Corporal Bruce Burton says they don't know if it was road-rage or something else, but it sounds like there's at least a possibility it could be random. "They found a 20-year old man that had been shot once in the arm and he had been fired upon by the shooter who also fired upon his truck and hit the kid in his arm. We don't have any real suspect information. The kid was kind of disoriented as to exactly what happened or even where it happened," Burton said.

Westcott called for possible legal action when Amali died and now he's watching what's going on in Missouri. The Springfield Zoo says their giraffe had difficulty unloading from the trailer and dropped to the ground and then was unable to stand.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Authorities say the owner of four pit bulls who attacked a 46-year-old woman has agreed to allow the dogs to be euthanized.
Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Myers says the woman, Mary Wolf, noticed some neighborhood dogs in her yard Monday morning and went outside to greet them. Once outside, she was attacked by the pit bulls. The dogs bit her on her arms and legs but Wolf was able to reach her vehicle for safety.
While in her car, Wolf couldn't contact anyone inside the house. About an hour after being attacked, a neighbor noticed Wolf sitting in the car and called 911.
Myers says Wolf was taken to a Midwest City hospital and received stitches for her wounds. Myers said it's not yet been determined if charges will be filed in the case.
He says the animals will be euthanized by Midwest City's animal control department.

(Tulsa, Ok)--Willing to trade experience for new blood and renewed enthusiasm. Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan admits the Black Officers Association lawsuit settlement will shake up the ranks of tenured cops in special divisions. One affect is term limits of 15 years for detectives. That means some of the most experienced in that division will be shifted out. However Jordan will not sell short the quality of officers waiting in the wings for their shot at these more high profile assignments. He says the younger officers have been well trained and are ready for the job. The Chief''s goal is that following the settlement's requirements will not lead to a negative impact on the police department or its ability to carry out its job to make Tulsa a safer city.

(Stroud, Ok)--Another example that law officials cannot take any traffic stop as routine. A vehicle was pulled over on the Turner Turnpike near Stroud. However instead of a handing over a speeding ticket the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper sensed something may be wrong. That is when he began searching the vehicle along Interstate 44 and made an amazing discovery. Tucked away in back near a load of oranges there were several boxes. Further inspection uncovers a shipment of cocaine in those boxes. This was not a small shipment. It is estimated the trooper found 150 kilograms of cocaine. The street value for the coke is about three million dollars. The driver was arrested.

(Tulsa, Ok)--A no contest plea by a Tulsa man charged with driving his car into several people on a Brookside parking lot will save families of the victims the pain of hearing the details again in a District Court trial. Admitting to Judge Kurt Glassco that he is confident a jury would find him guilty, Andrew Mathis pleads no contest. It was Halloween night in 2008 when a 1998 Camero plowed into a number of pedestrians. When others came to the aid of those hurt, witnesses say Mathis drove the car into them again. Two men died. Five others were injured. David and Lillian Lopez lost their brother that night. Both acccept the plea and feel confident Mathis will face the harshest punishment allowed. Judge Glassco told Mathis he will consider the no contest plea the same as a guilty plea at the time of sentencing. That is set for July 21st. Mathis faces either a life prison term or life without parole. Prosecutors objected to the no contest plea but the Judge rejected that objection.

TULSA, Ok. - Several gunshots were fired from the parking lot into Moe's Grill at 547 South Lewis around 10 p.m. Tuesday night. Tulsa Police Sergeant Robert Heidlage said, "A couple of individuals had fired shots into the front of the convenience store and fortunately didn't strike anyone inside the store or outside the store. The surveillance system on the convenience store actually showed the two suspects go across the parking lot and firing rounds into the front of the convenience store. They fled the area on Sixth Street. There is some indication from talking to the owner of the convenience store that he had received some threats since that killing occured (a week ago tonight) and that there's possibly a connection to that killing and the shooting that occured there tonight that it could be a retaliatory incident." Heidlage said the two suspects were both black males. One was wearing a long, blue-collared shirt and baggy blue jeans. The other was wearing a black shirt with writing on it that said "no" and that individual also wore a large, gold chain with baggy blue jeans and a blue hat. Heidlage said it's possibly related (to the homicide on May 18th) as a retaliatory incident and as the investigation continues it could move to develop suspects. (file photo)

He was arrested by police when he came out of the house. Police searched the area and found a pistol. Witnesses were unable to positively identify the suspect but he was taken in for questioning. Two other people were robbed near the restaurant after the Rib Crib shooting. Police are looking for the other suspects.

SKIATOOK, Ok. - The Skiatook school board says that it's with deep regret that they accept the resignation of their suspended superintendent Doctor Gary Johnson. A news release yesterday said Johnson has been instrumental in improving the quality of education for Skiatook students. Doctor Johnson issued a statement that said he accepted responsibility after an audit in March revealed that the district wasted half a million dollars on some goods and services that were overpriced.

TULSA, Ok. - Being in the right place at the right time helped police nab three suspects from an armed robbery. Tulsa Police Sergeant Jeff Davis says after a man was robbed at gunpoint near 31st and Sheridan about midnight this morning, shots were fired and an officer nearby spotted a vehicle speeding away. "Decided (it) looked suspicious enough that he would follow it. Followed the vehicle, got on the radio, let the officers in the area know. About the same time, Southside had a robbery go out. Same description," Davis said. The Broken Arrow Expressway was shut down near Harvard while officers arrested the three suspects at that location. Police recovered items allegedly taken in the robbery and the victim identified the suspects as the ones who robbed him.
