The Iba Awards are a BIG hit!
The Henry P. Iba citizen athlete awards went off without a hitch and everyone in attendance had a big time at the Renaissance Hotel. Former TU and ORU coach Bill Self was the keynote speaker while Rebecca Lobo handled the M.C. duties. The honorees, Derrick Brooks and Tamika Catchings were both humble and humorous. There were other great names there as well, like former Sooner kicker Uwe von Schamann. Even if you missed it last night, don't fret. Here are the honorees, stars and others who made the Iba awards a pleasure again!
First up, we'll hear from last nights MC and previous Iba award winner Rebecca Lobo as she discusses her first ever MC gig! Lobo is now retired from the WNBA and currently is a broadcaster.
Next up is female recipient Tamika Catchings.
Catchings is a star with the Indiana fever of the WNBA and has her own "Catch the stars" foundation to assist young people in her area.
Now let's hear from the male recipient, Derrick Brooks.
Brooks played for Florida State and was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1995 and has spent his entire career with the Bucs. Brooks is a ten time pro bowl selection.
Now to the big dog. After a fast rising career that included stops at Tulsa and Oral Roberts, Bill Self found himself right in the thick of a national championship game in March. Self's Kansas Jayhawks went to overtime with Memphis and finally beat the Tigers to win the title. Hear his stories about that classic game, the Jayhawks trip to the White House and more.
When the Iba awards roll into Tulsa, a ton of sports celebrities follow. One of those in attendance Monday night was former Oklahoma kicker Uwe von Schamann. von Schamann is most famous for "the kick."
Uwe knocked home the field goal that gave Oklahoma a huge win over Ohio State, he talks about that as well as other great moments and his attendance at the Iba wards as well.
