It's time for college football awards to begin shortening their "best of lists. Several of those have already been announced but there was one more on Thursday.
Matt Fodge of Oklahoma State is on the latest list, just read the release from OSU below to find out all about it.
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State senior Matt Fodge is one of only 10 punters included on the list of semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award presented to the top punter in the nation, it was announced today. This year 53 punters were nominated for the honor. The nominees were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on the following categories: net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line, average return yardage, and percentage not returned.
"It's an honor to be included in the top 10 for the Ray Guy Award," Fodge said. "It's the top individual honor you can receive as a punter and I'm flattered to be a semifinalist. It's a credit to my teammates and coaches that I am in this position."
Fodge has punted 20 times this year for a net average of 43.0 yards per punt, with 13 of his punts being downed inside the 20-yard line. The Garland, Texas product is the primary reason why the Cowboys rank fourth nationally in net punting. He has not had any of his punts find the endzone for a touchback and through eight games, Oklahoma State's opponents have mustered a staggeringly-low total of only five punt return yards.
The award is named for football legend, Ray Guy, the first punter ever inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (2004).
A national voting body of Bowl Subdivision coaches, sports information directors, national media, and former Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists, and ultimately the winner of this year's award. The winner will be announced live on ESPN during the ESPNU - Home Depot College Football Awards show, Thursday, December 11, 2008. The winner will again be honored at the Greater Augusta Sports Award Gala in early 2009.

Think Otis Campbell from Mayberry. John Daly may have a shot to sober up in jail in North Carolina. Poilce were called to a Hooters restaurant in Winston-Salem N.C. to check out an unconscious person.
It turned out that Daly was that person and he was intoxicated. Daly "appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative," refused to be taken to the hospital, and was asked to leave the restaurant several times by workers.
The Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Series champions. The Phils finished off a game that began on Monday as they beat the Devil Rays 4-3 to take the series four games to one.
Pedro Feliz bottom of the 7th RBI was the key blow the Phillies won their second World Series title and first since 1980.
Cole Hamels was named the series MVP and deservedly so. Hamels had five postseason starts, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

October 27 C-USA Football Players of the Week
![]() Damaris Johnson | |
Oct. 27, 2008
For the second straight week, two Tulsa players have earned Conference USA Football Player of the Week honors. Junior safety James Lockett won the defensive honor and freshman kick returner Damaris Johnson took the special teams award for the second straight week. The Golden Hurricane duo is joined by junior running back Curtis Steele of Memphis as this week's three honorees.
In Tulsa's 49-19 win over UCF, Lockett tallied five solo tackles, including three quarterback sacks for -27 yards and forced two fumbles. As a team, Tulsa had a NCAA season-high-tying nine sacks. Lockett's first forced fumble resulted in Tulsa scoring the first touchdown of the game. His second caused fumble led to a score that put the Golden Hurricane up 28-19 in the third quarter. Lockett is the first TU player to force two fumbles in a game since Nick Bunting accomplished it in the 2005 C-USA Championship Game. He finished the game with five total tackles.
For the second straight week, Johnson went over 100 yards in kickoff returns with four returns for 134 yards and a 33.5 average per return. With Tulsa trailing 19-14 to start the second half, Johnson took the second half kickoff 70 yards to the UCF 29-yard line and three plays later Tulsa scored the go-ahead touchdown. For the game, he had a game-high 183 all-purpose yards. Johnson is the first C-USA player to be named Special Teams Player of the Week in consecutive weeks since TCU's Nick Browne on Oct. 13 and Oct. 20, 2003.
Steele rushed for a career high two touchdowns with 178 yards on 29 carries in a 36-30 victory over Southern Miss. Both of his touchdowns came in the fourth quarter to help secure the Tigers' six-point lead, including an eventual game-winning touchdown carry for 22 yards with 1:24 left in the game. Steele amassed 237 all-purpose yards in the contest, which ranks tied for 12th all-time at Memphis and is the most since the DeAngelo Williams era ended in 2005. He also registered 59 yards receiving on a hook-and-ladder play in the first quarter that led to a Memphis touchdown and a 14-0 lead for the Tigers to start the game. Steele averaged 6.1 yards per carry en route to his second highest rush total of his career and fourth 100-yard game of the season, which ranks tied for fifth at Memphis. He amassed 126 of his rushing yards in the second half, with 80 yards on 12 carries coming in the fourth quarter and mostly taken on direct snaps.
BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Travis Lewis, Oklahoma, LB, Fr, San Antonio, Texas
Travis Lewis led the Sooners with 15 tackles, two of which went for loss in No. 4 Oklahoma's victory at Kansas State. He also intercepted two passes and chalked up 55 yards in returns. His 15 stops tied for the most in the Big 12 last weekend. Lewis got his first pick on KSU's opening possession and returned it 27 yards to set up OU's first score.
OSU alum and billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens has made yet another gift to the Oklahoma State family. Read the release from OSU below and don't fret Cowboy fans, your millions are still there!
Pickens makes $63 million gift; OSU on schedule to complete west end zone
STILLWATER, Ok., October 27, 2008 -- T. Boone Pickens, the noted oil and gas industry leader and philanthropist, said today he has contributed an additional $63 million to Oklahoma State University for the completion of the university's football stadium and its west end zone.
Pickens and OSU also criticized news coverage, based on unsubstantiated blog and message board reports, that his earlier contributions of $165 million, managed by his BP Capital hedge fund, have been lost due to market losses. Pickens said his fund has not been immune to the global economic downturn and the remaining $125 million in the fund is being returned to the school's athletic department this week.
With today's gift, the net value of Pickens' gifts is now $188 million after the market decline.
"Once again, Boone has stepped up at an important time to support Oklahoma State University. In spite of the unsettled economic situation, OSU has experienced record levels of giving for academic and athletic programs in the past year. We remain most appreciative to Boone for his unwavering generosity to Oklahoma State," said Burns Hargis, President of OSU.
"With Boone's support and the continuing involvement of other donors, we are able to continue working toward the completion of our stadium project," said Mike Holder, OSU VP for Athletics. "It is our number one priority, and we will finish that before moving onto other athletic initiatives, including an indoor practice facility and other aspects of our athletic village."
"Combined with this $63 million, OSU is continuing forward with improvements to its athletic initiatives," said Pickens, noting he has been motivated, in part, by the continuing improvements in the school's football program which lost a close 28-24 game to the number one ranked University of Texas Longhorns on Saturday, but remains a top ten team in national polls. "I'm excited at the performance of our coaches and players, both on and off the field."
"Boone's generosity has helped to transform our football stadium and facilities to a level where we can compete with any program in the country," said OSU head football coach Mike Gundy. "Thanks to Boone and many others who have stepped up in a big way the past couple of years to support our football program the future is very promising for us."
"We are pleased progress will continue on the west end zone project and we are grateful to Boone for helping to make it possible," said Doug Burns, chairman of OSU's Board of Regents. "With supporters like Boone and many others who have generously given the past year, Oklahoma State is well positioned to move ahead academically and athletically. The Regents completely support plans to complete the west end zone project and begin the athletic village projects when the economic climate improves."
Oklahoma State University is a modern land-grant system that cuts across disciplines to better prepare students for a new world. Oklahoma's only university with a statewide presence, OSU improves the lives of people in Oklahoma, the nation, and the world through integrated, high-quality teaching, research and outreach. OSU has more than 32,000 students across its five-campus system and nearly 21,000 on its Stillwater campus; with students from all 50 states and about 110 nations. Established in 1890, OSU has graduated more than 200,000 students who have made a lasting impact on Oklahoma and the world. CREATE - INNOVATE - EDUCATE - GO STATE!

Oklahoma State couldn't convert a fourth and six with just over two minutes to play and lost to Texas 28-24. The Pokes fought from behind all day and had a final chance with :07 to play but Zac Robinson's Hail Mary fell short and the Longhorns held on for the win.
See the gamecenter recap of one terrific ballgame.
In Manhattan, Kansas it was all Oklahoma. The Sooners overcame some early defensive struggles to beat the Wildcats 55-28. K-State tied the game at 28 each late in the first quarter but that was the last hurrah for the Cats.

On-Campus Salute on Sunday, Oct. 26, as the Golden Hurricane host the University
of Central Florida Knights.
Throughout the football season, each Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division
I-A) Hall of Fame inductee returns to his school for the special on-field event,
where a commemorative plaque is presented to the university for permanent
display. Beginning with the Foundation's inaugural Hall of Fame class in 1951, the
On-Campus Salute has served as the first of numerous highlights in the Hall of
Fame experience, giving each inductee one more chance to take the field.
The first coach in history to lead both a Big Ten and a Pac-10 team to victories in
the Rose Bowl, Cooper tallied at least a share of nine conference championships,
including five at Tulsa, one at Arizona State and three at Ohio State. A four-time
American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year, he led his teams to 14 bowl games
in 24 seasons. Cooper formerly served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association and as a
professional scout in the NFL. He currently acts as a college football analyst for ESPN and resides in Columbus,
Ohio.
The Tulsa coach previously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame was Francis Schmidt in 1971. For a
complete list of Tulsa inductees, please visit

City's historic Waldorf=Astoria Hotel on Tuesday, December 9. The National Hall of Fame Salute at the Tostitos
Fiesta Bowl follows on January 5, giving the class recognition on a national stage, and events culminate with the
College Football Hall of Fame's Enshrinement Festival in South Bend, Ind., July 17-18.

Oral Roberts is the preseason favorite to win the 2008-09 Summit League men's basketball championship according to a poll of the league's head coaches, sports information directors and selected media members. North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside earned the nod as the league's Preseason Player of the Year.
With 13 first-place votes and 399 total points in the poll, Oral Roberts, the defending league champion and an NCAA Tournament qualifier, edged out North Dakota State by five points. The Bison received six first-place votes and 394 points to finish second just ahead of Oakland, who received the second-highest total of first-place votes with 10, and totaled 391 points in the poll. IUPUI, who received one first-place vote, placed fourth with 315 points. Rounding out the voting was IPFW in fifth followed by UMKC, Southern Utah, South Dakota State, Western Illinois and Centenary.
Woodside, a first team All-Summit League selection last season, returns as the league's top scorer in 2008-09. The senior averaged 20.7 points per game, a total that would have placed 25th nationally but NDSU did not count toward official NCAA statistics because of its reclassification to Division I. He is joined on the preseason first team by teammate Brett Winkelman, the Summit League's leading rebounder (8.3 rpg) and second-leading returning scorer (19.2 ppg) from last season and a 2007-08 first teamer.
Oakland also placed a pair of its players on the first team in forward Derick Nelson, a 2007-08 first team all-league choice and the third-leading rebounder in the Summit League (7.4 rpg), and guard Johnathon Jones, the Summit League's leading assist man (6.0 apg), a second team selection last season and the lone non-senior on this year's preseason first team.
Also on the first team is Oral Roberts' guard Robert Jarvis, the 2007-08 Summit League Sixth Man of the Year and a first team all-league selection. Rounding out the first team is Dane Brumagin of UMKC, who ranked 14th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and the fourth-highest scoring average (17.1) among league returnees.
Five players from five different schools comprise The Summit League's preseason second team, including a third all-league selection for both North Dakota State and Oakland in guards Mike Nelson (NDSU), the league's top three-point shooter a year ago (.461 pct), and Erik Kangas (OU), who led the league in three-point field goals per game (3.35). Oral Roberts' forward Marcus Lewis, a member of the 2007-08 All-Summit League Newcomer team, also earned a second team selection. Rounding out the second team are IUPUI's Gary Patterson, the team's leading returning scorer, and South Dakota State forward Kai Williams, the lone non-senior on the second team and the Jackrabbits' leading scorer (14.0 ppg) and rebounder (7.8 rpg) last season.
The Summit League Men's Basketball Championship moves to Sioux Falls, S.D., this season with tournament dates set for March 7-10. The league's top eight seeds will advance to Sioux Falls Arena to compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
IUPUI will be the first Summit League team to tip-off the season when it faces Northeastern on Nov. 11 in Ann Arbor, Mich., as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. The league schedule begins Dec. 2 when Southern Utah hosts Oakland.
The Summit League Men's and Women's Basketball Media Teleconference is slated for 10 a.m. (CST) Wednesday, Oct. 29.

High school football is important in Oklahoma but Ohio just went a step overboard. A coach there decided to pay some of his players to try and win games. Read the story and feel free to leave your thoughts below.
EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- A governing body says an Ohio high school football team is forfeiting two games because the head coach paid players for their performances.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association says the payments violate rules regarding the amateur standing of the athletes.
In addition to forfeiting the two games, East Liverpool head coach Pat McNicol has been suspended for the team's final game.
Stried said he does not know how much the players were paid and that two players who received payments have been ruled ineligible for the final game.
East Liverpool Athletics Director Bob Shansky referred calls seeking comment to School Superintendent Kenneth Halbert Jr.
Messages left for Halbert and McNicol by the Associated Press were not answered.
Tommy Wade, a college basketball coach for nearly two decades and the head coach at Oklahoma City University, has been hired as the director of player development for coach Travis Ford and the Cowboy Basketball program, it was announced today.
"I'm very excited to have Coach Wade as a part of our staff," said Ford. "He's someone that I've known for a long time. He's somebody who has a great reputation of being very organized, very detailed. He has a great reputation of having a great knowledge of the game of basketball. Obviously, his success speaks for itself; the national titles that he's won the last 6-8 years as a part of different staffs. We feel very fortunate to have him as a part of our staff and he will be a huge asset to us all."
Wade, who comes to Oklahoma State after a three-year stint at Oklahoma City, had been a member of the Stars' coaching staff during their back-to-back NAIA Division I championship seasons the past two years. With Wade's assistance, OCU went 95-17 with three NAIA national title game appearances, three Sooner Athletic Conference championships and two SAC Tournament titles in three seasons. He also coached six All-Americans.
Prior to OCU, Wade was an assistant at Kentucky Wesleyan, which won the 2001 NCAA Division II championship, reached four national championship games, won three regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference crowns, three conference tournament titles and posted four 30-win seasons in six years. Kentucky Wesleyan went 161-24 during Wade's tenure as an assistant.
Wade has been a part of three NCAA Tournament teams. At South Alabama, Wade aided in winning two Sun Belt Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament berths working as an assistant coach for Bill Musselman and Bob Weltich. Wade was also part of an Ohio Valley Conference championship team at Murray State.
"For me to be a part of Coach Ford's staff and Oklahoma State's basketball tradition is like a dream come true for me," Wade said. "Working for Coach Ford, whom I've known for a long, long time and respect him - I think he's one of the top young coaches in the country. For me to have the opportunity to work for him and this staff, it's an exciting time for me and I'm looking forward to it."
Wade's appointment fills Coach Ford's initial staff at Oklahoma State.
You would have to live under a rock to not know that Austin, Texas will have even more orange than normal this weekend. The Oklahoma State Cowboys (#6 BCS) hit the road to play the Texas Longhorns (#1 everywhere) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The Pokes have certainly played big games against highly ranked teams. Back in 1984, arguably the biggest of all bedlam games took place. No. 3/2 Oklahoma State visited No. 2/3 Oklahoma to decide who would represent the Big Eight in the Orange Bowl. The game was tied 7-7 at the half, and OSU led 14-7 in the third quarter before OU scored 17 unanswered points for a 24-14 win.
But with all that being said, is this the biggest game in the history of Cowboy football? Please leave your thoughts and comments below so we can get this week rolling!
The OSU win over Mizzou got great national attention for the Pokes. A #6 BCS ranking, #7 in the AP poll and now some national TV attention as well.
ABC has decided to pick up the Cowboys game with Iowa State November 1st.
See the entire release below.
OSU-Iowa State Selected By ABC

Tulsa has spent a lot of time at the top of Conference USA rankings and honors. That is no different this week as the Hurricane have two of the top players of the week again.
Take a look below at the C-USA release to read which players got the awards.
Tulsa's Duo of Brennan Marion and Damaris Johnson Earn C-USA Player of the Week Honors
Tulsa has now had five players honored with the weekly award
Irving, Texas -- University of Tulsa's Brennan Marion and Damaris Johnson were honored as the Conference USA Football Players of the Week, it was announced today by the C-USA office. Marion was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Johnson picked up the honor for Special Teams.
Marion, a 6'1" senior receiver, set a new Conference USA record for yards per catch (38.8), grabbing six passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns to earn offensive honors. He started things off for the Hurricane in a 77-35 win over UTEP last Saturday with a 97-yard touchdown reception to tie the score 7-7. On the next possession, Marion's 51-yard TD reception put the Hurricane ahead 14-7. He added a 40-yard TD reception in the third quarter.
The 5'8" true freshman Johnson set a school record for kickoff return yards in a single game with 211 yards on six returns for a 35.2 average that earned him the special teams recognition. After Tulsa fell behind 28-21 in the first quarter, Johnson took the subsequent kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to knot the score at 28-28 and give Tulsa the momentum. The Hurricane never trailed after that. He ended the game with 296 all-purpose yards.
This year Tulsa has had five players earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Quarterback David Johnson, safety Charles Davis and defensive end Un'Tavious Scott have earned the honor previously this season.
USA Today would like to get your vote for the college football player of the week especially since two of the nominees are from our state. Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and Tulsa receiver Brennan Marion are both up for the award.

We all love to look at the polls. We angst over them, talk about them, and complain about them.
But the first BCS poll of the year doesn't leave a lot of room for us to not like. Sure, Texas is first but after they beat Oklahoma that makes sense. The good news is that the Sooners are fourth and Oklahoma State came in number six. Tulsa even cracked the poll at number 19. The Hurricane are getting some national attention nowadays. Take a look at the Dennis Dodd article on CBS Sportsline.com before you check all the numbers.
Check out the entire poll below and remember, there is a lot of football to play!

Boston got down three games to one in the ALCS but hung in there and made it tough. But the Red Sox didn't have the magic this time as Tampa Bay wins game seven 3-1 to take the series and go to their first World Series ever.
Matt Garza shut down the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 and is the MVP of the series.
Tampa Bay is trying to become the first team to go from the worst record in baseball to World Series champion in a year.
Tulsa finally cracked the major polls while Oklahoma State continues their climb toward the top five. The good news continues as all three teams are in the poll for the first time since 1945.
After walloping UTEP 77-35 Tulsa joins the AP poll at number 22 and the Coaches poll at an even more impressive 19. The Hurricane have a big ESPN game coming up with defending Conference USA champ Central Florida next Sunday night.
OSU is up one spot in the AP poll to number seven after their easy homecoming win over Baylor. The Pokes jump from 10th to 8th in the coaches poll. The Cowboys have a chance to make a BIG move this week when they play at number one Texas on Saturday night.
Oklahoma goes from 6th to 5th in the coaches poll after their win over a ranked Kansas team. The AP voters didn't seem to be impressed, they left OU at number 4 in their rankings.

Tulsa hung 77 on UTEP, Oklahoma State ran away from Baylor and Oklahoma bounced back from the Texas loss with a win over a ranked Kansas team.
The college football weekend got back to normal with three wins for our three FBS teams. Tulsa and UTEP combined for eight first quarter touchdowns before the Hurricane defense settled down and crushed the Miners 77-35. David Johnson threw for 434 yards and five touchdowns while TU ran up 791 total yards. Tulsa is 7-0 and will almost certainly be ranked when the new polls come out Sunday afternoon.
Oklahoma State had little trouble with Baylor, winning 34-6 in Stillwater. Dez Bryant caught 11 passes for 212 yards and two scores in the win. The game recap is right here and it's pretty impressive! The Pokes have a HUGE game next weekend at Texas.
Bob Stoops is now 10-0 the week after the Texas game and he got there with a 45-31 thumping of Kansas. Sam Bradford was his usual self throwing for 468 yards as the Sooners stay in the Big 12 title hunt. Read about the game and watch where OU winds up in the new polls.

The Boston Red Sox looked like they were done. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays led 7-0 in the bottom of the 7th when Boston exploded for an 8-7 win.
The Sox scored four in the 7th and followed that up with three more in the 8th before winning on a J.D. Drew single in the bottom of the 9th.
Read the game recap and see if the Devil Rays can come back in game six on Saturday in St. Petersburg.
It's almost old hat. Courtney Paris is the per-season Big 12 womens player of the year. The Oklahoma star has already won the award two straight years and looks to be hands down the best player again.
Paris is joined on the first team by Oklahoma State guard Andrea Riley and OU's Whitney Hand is co-incoming freshman of the year. See all the lists below from the Big 12.
Big 12 Coaches Vote Hand, Paris
Oct. 15, 2008
IRVING, Texas -- There must be something in the water at the Lloyd Noble Center.
After becoming the first school to sweep the Big 12's preseason vote for No. 1 team in men's and women's basketball, Oklahoma swept the league's picks for preseason player of the year and freshman of the year.
Wednesday, the Big 12 Conference named Courtney Paris its Preseason Player of the Year for a third consecutive season and Whitney Hand, who tied with Texas A&M's Tyra White, its Co-Preseason Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
The notice was made following Tuesday's announcement of the Big 12 men's basketball preseason honors, which included Oklahoma's Blake Griffin as player of the year and Willie Warren as freshman of the year, and last week's release of the Big 12 preseason basketball polls.
"Year in and year out the Big 12 conference is flooded with great players," OU head coach Sherri Coale said, "so for us to have two off of our roster singled out for preseason honors is truly humbling.
"Courtney's collegiate statistics are mind boggling, so the expectations for her, in this her senior season, are not surprising."
Paris is a reigning two-time Big 12 Player of the Year who became the conference's first three-time consensus All-America First Team selection last season. The Piedmont, Calif., native averaged 19 points and led the nation in rebounding with 15 per game. The senior enters the 2008-09 as the owner of 15 NCAA records and nearly 50 Big 12 Conference records.
"The freshman award always feels a bit dicey, as none of us have any way of knowing which of the talented cadre brought into our league each year will actually excel at this level. However, in 13 years of coaching in the Big 12, I have never had a freshman more prepared to make an impact than Whitney Hand."
Hand finished her prep career as the second-leading scorer in Texas' history with 3,649 and was named a High School All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The Fort Worth, Texas, native led Liberty Christian (Argyle, Texas) to consecutive state championships in 2007 and 2008. Hand led all divisions in the state by making 108 3-pointers and 85 percent of her free throws.
Paris led the Preseason All-Big 12 team completed by guards Shalee Lehning (Kansas State), Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) and Takia Starks (Texas A&M) and forward Kelsey Griffin (Nebraska). All five were 2008 All-Big 12 First Team members.
The top vote-getter for Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year was Texas A&M junior Tanisha Smith, a 6-0 forward/guard who transferred from Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Oklahoma begins its season with the 1,000th game in the program's history as its opens the Preseason WNIT hosting UC-Riverside in Norman, Okla., on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m.
The Sooners precede the regular season with exhibitions at home on Nov. 6 against Western State College of Colorado and Nov. 11 against Oklahoma Christian. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
The OU women will also hold an exclusive scrimmage for Fast Break Club members and season-ticket holders Thursday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.

Everyone knows Oklahoma sophomore Blake Griffin is one fine college basketball player. Big 12 has confirmed those feelings Tuesday when they named Griffin he pre-season Big 12 player of th year.
Griffin was a unanimous choice by the leagues coaches. Griffin wasn't the only Sooner honored. Willie Warren was named pre-season freshman of the year.
Take a look below at the complete list of Big 12 honors.
Sophomore forward Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) has been named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, it was announced. Junior guard Mario Little (Kansas) was chosen as Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while guard Willie Warren (Oklahoma) earned Preseason Freshman of the Year accolades. Players honored in preseason voting were selected by the league head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
Griffin is one of two All-Big 12 First Team performers back for this season. The sophomore forward led the Sooners in scoring (14.7 ppg) rebounding (9.1) and field goal percentage (.568) a year ago. The scoring average was the highest by an OU freshman in 24 seasons. He had 10 double-doubles, including his last seven against squads that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
Little arrives in Lawrence after leading his junior college team to a 68-5 record over the last two seasons. He averaged 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists a year ago at Chipola College. Little shot 55 percent from the floor, including 40.3 percent from 3-point range. The junior guard was rated as the No. 1 JUCO player in the country by Rivals.com.
Warren was a consensus top 20 player nationally by the various recruiting services after his senior campaign. The freshman guard finished with 24.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.4 steals per game in 2007-08. The 2008 Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year and a McDonald's All-America selection, he helped his team to a 38-1 record and the Class 5A state title.
Griffin is the third Oklahoma athlete (Taj Gray, 2005-06; Hollis Price, 2002-03) to earn preseason player accolades. Little is the first Kansas newcomer recognized by the Big 12, while Warren is the second from OU (Drew Lavender, 2003-04) touted as the top freshman.
The Preseason All-Big 12 team was also announced. In addition to Griffin, the following players were recognized - Curtis Jerrells (Baylor), Sherron Collins (Kansas), A.J. Abrams and Damion James (Texas). Jerrells is the other returning All-Big 12 First Team choice back from a season ago.

The Oklahoma City Thunder got their first exhibition win in Tulsa Tuesday night at the BOK center. Unfortunately it didn't carry over to Wednesday at the Ford Center as the Clippers beat OKC 90-88.
Kevin Durant led the way with 18 points but couldn't hit the three late in the game that might have given the Thunder the win. OKC now gets back to practice until October 32rd when they visit the Phoenix Suns.
Monday is news conference day at Oklahoma State University. Head coach Mike Gundy as well as assistant coaches and players as well meet with the media and answer all of the weeks questions.
Take the time to read some of the questions and answers below as the Pokes prepare for Homecoming 2008 and the Baylor Bears.
Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement:
"We had a great weekend. It's a very exciting time for our football team and for everyone who's involved with Oklahoma State athletics. We were able to get back into town around 1:30 and we had a great following at the airport, which was very special for the players to experience that. The players will be here this afternoon to get back to work. I know the question is going to come up of how we're going to handle the team now with all the national attention and the media. Our staff and our players believe in preparation and hard work. One thing we're consistent about is that we believe in working tirelessly as a staff and as a team in preparing to put ourselves in a position to win on Saturday, no matter who we play or no matter what the situation is. It will be the same this week. I'm not trying to deflect the excitement that's here and on campus. It's tremendous. The players have worked very hard and they deserve it. But what's important is the preparation for the task at hand, getting back to work today and preparing for Saturday. It will be another big game for us."
On Homecoming weekend:
"We have the best homecoming in the country and it's the largest homecoming in the country. My wife and I are very proud to be involved with Oklahoma State and our homecoming. Anybody that hasn't been to our Friday night walk-around and experienced it, like when we've had new coaches experience it, are amazed at what it's like."
On the players' attitude:
"I think our players have handled themselves very well. I think they understand that you're only as good as your next game. Part of our job as coaches is to bring them back to earth. I got hit with a question yesterday about how long do we let them enjoy this. I don't think you ever take that from them. I think they will remember that game for the rest of their lives. So let them enjoy it and keep it in their pocket. But when we get in meetings and practice we will get focused and get ready to play."
On Baylor:
"They're playing very well. Offensively they're very athletic with their quarterback. They're doing some really nice things moving the ball and scoring points. Defensively they're loading up to stop the run. Their free safety, Jordan Lake, may be as good a tackler as we have in the league. When backs or quarterbacks come through the front seven, he squares up and tackles very well. He tackled Dantrell Savage last year in open field, which is not an easy thing to do. He's a good player. By looking at the tape our players will understand that we have to work hard and prepare and get ready to play. We don't have a day to waste. "
On Dez Bryant:
"He's very competitive and likes to play. When he goes down, you get concerned. He is a very physical person and I joke with him at times that he's like tackling a bowling ball. Because he's competitive and he's not scared to across the middle, at times he is vulnerable, but the good ones are. The guys that really have a chance to excel at this level and beyond this level are not concerned with going across the middle. He's a part of our team and one of the reasons we're having success. He kind of makes us go and he continues on. We don't ever like to see players go down. When he got hit that first time he got hit right up under the chin and he took a pretty good blow. But he came back in four or five plays later."
Linebacker Andre Sexton
On being 6-0 and already being bowl eligible:
"We take one game at a time, but still they rank Baylor and us at the bottom of the South every year. So, they don't expect big things from us, but Baylor is a really good team this year in everything that I have seen from them so far. They have great talent. They are young. They are not a team that you just come out and take lightly, so we really have to come out and practice hard this week. We have to focus on correcting our mistakes and getting more pressure on the quarterback because that is going to be really important this week."
On growing as a team:
"It's really important. We have been in situations where we have been up in games and somehow thrown them away. This year, it is finally going to work in our favor. We have the composure and maturity to pull off those games. Like this week. The plan is we have to go after the quarterback early. We've got to put up points on offense. They can put up points, too, given the opportunity. We cannot take anyone lightly in the Big 12. It seems like anytime someone gets in the top 10, they slip out of there right away. We have to try to stay focused and move ahead like we want to."
Linebacker Orie Lemon
On how things have changed:
"We are just brothers. We treat each other as brothers - on and off the field. We stay together as a family. It changed so much from last year. The seniors really want to go out on top. Overall, our effort has been way better than what it was in past years."
On defensive performance at Missouri:
"I give us an A, but we could have played much better than we did. The game would not have been close if we would have played better in certain situations. We made some mistakes that we have to correct. We are going to watch film, get that fixed and just get better every day."
Defensive End Derek Burton
On what it will take to slow down the Baylor offense:
"We have to contain. They have skill players that can play, and their quarterback is really, really fast. We have to keep him off-balance a little bit and try to contain him."

With a win over previously number three Missouri, Oklahoma State jumped into the top ten of just about every poll.
That win has also paid off in several national awards and some other attention.

Fans Can Vote For OSU's Kendall Hunter To Win National Player Of The Week
Fans can text message VOTE to 51234 on their wireless phone to opt in for the chance to vote.
ATLANTA, Oct. 12, 2008 - Four nominees for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week award have been announced after the seventh week of college football action, and now it's up to fans to determine the winner. Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter, University of Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley, University of Arkansas running back Michael Smith and University of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes have been selected by ESPN as this week's top candidates, based on the players' outstanding performances over the weekend. Fans can text message VOTE to 51234 on their wireless phone to opt in for the chance to vote.
Hunter stole the spotlight in #17 Oklahoma State's 28-23 defeat of #3 Missouri when he rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown. Shipley caught 11 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, and had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the #5 Longhorns 45-35 win over the top-ranked Sooners in their annual Red River Rivalry. Smith rushed for 176 yards on 35 carries and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 63-yard run in the fourth quarter to lead Arkansas in a 25-22 win over #20 Auburn. Spikes, only the second defensive player to be nominated this year for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week Award, intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown in #11 Florida's 51-21 rout of SEC conference rival #4 LSU.
"This is truly an exciting season of college football, due in part to the play of these exceptional and passionate student-athletes," said Tim McGhee, director of corporate sponsorships for AT&T. "And while we are excited to present the opportunity, it is now all in the fans hands to pick the week seven recipient of the AT&T All-America Player of the Week Award."
Fans have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday to submit their votes. The winner will be announced during Thursday's ESPN College Football Primetime Presented by Applebee's. Standard text messaging rates apply.
There is no limit on fan voting, and each vote counts as one entry into a sweepstakes to win a trip to the 2009 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship game in Miami. Full sweepstakes rules can be found at www.espnallamerica.com/rules.aspx.
In December, four finalists for the AT&T All-America Player of the Year Award will be announced during a one-hour special on ESPN in conjunction with the announcement of the AT&T ESPN All-America Team as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.
Cowboy Football Named Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team Of The Week
DALLAS (OSU Athletics <http://www.okstate.com>) -- Following their 28-23 win at No. 3 Missouri last Saturday night, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, along with the Texas Longhorns, have been named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Teams of the Week for games the weekend of Oct. 11.
The 17th-ranked Cowboys travelled to Columbia, Mo., and knocked off Mizzou to improve to 6-0 for just the third time in school history and the first time since 1997.
Quarterback Zac Robinson led the OSU offense against the Tigers as the junior tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score. And the Cowboy defense, led by Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week Andre Sexton, stifled Mizzou's high-powered offense and recorded three interceptions.
With the win, OSU vaulted into the Top 10 in the nationals polls, entering the Associated Press poll at No. 8. That ranking marks the first time the Cowboys have been in the AP's Top 10 since 1988. They are also ranked 10th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
For more information on the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week, go to www.footballwriters.com.
Andre Sexton has been named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Mizzou.
Oklahoma State linebacker Andre Sexton was named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today, for his performance against the third-ranked Missouri Tigers. It is the third such honor by a Cowboy this season, and the first by an OSU defensive player.
The 6-1 junior from Houston, Texas, was all over the field Saturday, recording a game-high 13 tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage. He also picked off a Chase Daniel pass and returned it 39 yards.
With Oklahoma State leading 21-17, Missouri took over at its own 48 yard line. Under pressure on third-and-13, Daniel threw a pass from midfield that Sexton intercepted at the OSU 17-yard line, and returned it to Missouri territory. That turnover led to the game-winning touchdown.
On the season, Sexton leads the team with 49 tackles, four pass breakups and a team-leading three quarterback hurries. He has also forced two fumbles and recovered one.
Sexton and the eighth-ranked Cowboys (6-0 overall, 2-0 in Big 12) host the Baylor Bears (3-3, 1-1) for Saturday's Homecoming game against Baylor (3-3, 1-1) for homecoming Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

For the first time in Big Twelve history the mens and womens basketball teams from the same school are pre-season #1 in the coaches poll.
Take a look at the polls and the stories from the Big 12 below as we get closer to the tip off for college basketball.
Sooner men
For the first time in Big 12 history, Oklahoma is the preseason favorite to win the conference title in a vote of the league's head coaches. The Sooners received three first-place votes in polling for the 2008-09 season. The previous high for OU in the preseason selections was second on four different occasions. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.
Oklahoma welcomes back four starters from last season, returning nearly 70 percent of its scoring overall. The Sooners are led by sophomore Blake Griffin. The forward was the first freshman in OU history to earn All-Big 12 First, Second or Third Team honors after leading the squad in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (9.1) and field goal percentage (.568).
Texas came in just behind OU with 107 points and will also return four starters. The Longhorns bring back 73.7 percent of their scoring and 89.7 percent of rebounding, with nine of the team's top 10 scorers slated to suit up again. Senior A.J. Abrams and junior Damion James are the top returnees. James set a UT single-season rebounding record with 393 boards a year ago.
Baylor easily surpassed its highest preseason prediction in Big 12 history, tying Kansas for third in this year's poll. The Bears, fresh off their first NCAA appearance since 1988, hope to earn the first back-to-back NCAA bids in school history. Prior to this poll, the highest BU had been selected in the preseason tally was No. 7 in 2006-07.
KU, the defending-NCAA champion, earned the remaining three first-place votes. The Jayhawks will be sporting a fresh look this season with an entirely new starting lineup. Junior guard Sherron Collins and sophomore center Cole Aldrich, who were significant contributors a year ago, will be joined by a highly-rated recruiting class.
Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Missouri were chosen fifth, sixth and seventh. The Aggies and Cowboys, along with Nebraska, were postseason squads last season. The remainder of the poll saw Kansas State at No. 8, followed by the Huskers, Texas Tech, Iowa State and Colorado.
The Big 12 season gets underway on Friday, November 14 with seven schools in action. Conference play begins Saturday, January 10 with five league contests.
The Big 12 Conference will hold its preseason media day on Thursday, October 23 in Oklahoma City - site of the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships.

Sooner women
Oklahoma was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the 2008-09 Big 12 women's basketball regular season title in a vote of the league's head coaches.
This season's predictions proved to be difficult as the 12 first-place votes were spread among five programs. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. The Big 12 is coming off a campaign that produced a conference-record 11 postseason bids, including eight in the 2008 NCAA Championship field.
The Sooners received seven first-place nods and 124 total points as they return four starters, highlighted by three-time unanimous All-America Courtney Paris. Texas earned one first-place vote and 95 points to nab second, followed by Iowa State in third with two first-place votes and 93 points. Baylor was picked fourth with one first-place vote and 89 points while 2008 Big 12 postseason champion Texas A&M was chosen fifth with 85 points. Oklahoma State earned the final first-place vote with 79 points in sixth.
Defending Big 12 regular season champion Kansas State was picked seventh followed by Nebraska, Kansas, Texas Tech, Colorado and Missouri.
BU, ISU, KSU, NU, OU, OSU, UT and TAMU competed in the NCAA Tournament last year as the Big 12 became the first conference in the history of the championship to compile an 8-0 record in first round games. CU, KU and TTU represented the conference in the WNIT.
Big 12 squads return 108 letterwinners to 2008-09 squads, including 41 starters. Conference teams combined lost just 20 seniors from last year with only six of those averaging double-digit scoring.
The 2008-09 regular season gets underway on Friday, Nov. 14. Big 12 head coaches and select student-athletes will convene in Oklahoma City on Oct. 22 for the annual Big 12 Women's Basketball Media Day. Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center will serve as the site of the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship Thursday-Sunday, March 12-15.

five set in 1988. With 252 total yards against the Aggies, QB Zac Robinson has 5,353 yards of total offense in his career. He also tied a career-high three touchdowns for the third time this season. Ugo Chinasa and Patrick Lavine each returned interceptions for touchdowns. The last time OSU had two interceptions returned for touchdowns was in 2001. Dez Bryant had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown to be named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. He also had three receiving scores in the game.MISSOURI

at TexasMissouri's victory over Nebraska was the Tigers'
first win in Lincoln since 1978. Mizzou had 462 yards of total offense, with 412 of those coming from QB Chase Daniel through three quarters. Daniel completed 18-of-23 passes for 253 yards and 3 TDs with no interceptions. TB Derrick Washington leads the nation in scoring. He has averaged 14.40 points per game (10 rushing and two receiving TDs), and has scored at least two touchdowns each game this season. Brock Christopher's interception for TD marks the fourth such score for the Tiger defense (all by the linebacker crew) in 2008. Jeremy Maclin notched his 14th career receiving TD, which moved him into a tie for fourth on the MU career list with Mel Gray (1968-70).
Tulsa's offense has been hard to stop this year, averaging over 50 points a game. But it was a Hurricane defender who ended up with a C-USA award this week.
Defensive end Un'Tavious Scott is the Conference USA defensive player of the week after he caused one fumble and recovered two in TU's 63-28 win over Rice.
Tulsa's Un'Tavious Scott Earns C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Scott is the third Tulsa player to earn the weekly award
Irving, Texas -- University of Tulsa's Un'Tavious Scott was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today by the C-USA office.
Scott, a 6'3" junior defensive end from Pahokee, Florida, was one of the key players in a tremendous team defensive performance for the Golden Hurricane last Saturday in a 63-28 victory over Rice in a Conference USA match-up of West Division undefeated teams.
Scott totaled three tackles, including one stop for -5 yards. He also forced one fumble and recovered two other fumbles. Scott's second fumble recovery led to a Tulsa touchdown, giving the Hurricane a 56-21 lead.
His award marks the third time this season that a Tulsa player has earned C-USA weekly honors. Quarterback David Johnson and free safety Charles Davis earned the weekly award for their performances against New Mexico in September.
Bryant is this week's Big 12 special teams player of the week for his efforts in the No. 17 Cowboys' 56-28 win over Texas A&M Saturday night. He becomes the first Big 12 player to be honored twice by the league in 2008.
Previously, Bryant had been named the Big 12 player of the week and the Walter Camp Foundation national player of the week for his efforts against the University of Houston.
Against the Aggies, Bryant had a spectacular 78-yard punt return for a score. It was the 11th longest punt return in Oklahoma State history and the longest by a Cowboy since 1997. Thanks to a 71-yard punt return against Houston, Bryant joins Florida's Brandon James as the only two players in the country with two punt returns for scores this season.
Bryant also had three receiving touchdowns against the Aggies and 216 all-purpose yards. He has seven touchdowns in his last eight quarters of play.
Bryant enters Saturday's game at No. 3 Missouri second in the nation in scoring (13.2 points per game), fourth in punt returns (23.6 yards per return), fifth in receiving yards (110 per game), and sixth in all-purpose yards (178.4 per game).
The Oklahoma State-Missouri game is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.

Oklahoma basketball is not only fun but now, it's better looking! Jeff Capel and his guys rolled out a new set of uniforms for the Sooners on Thursday.
The players like it, the coaches like it and the fans will like it as well. See the uniform and read the release below.

Oct. 2, 2008
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team unveiled its 2008-09 uniforms on Thursday, a white home set and a crimson away combo from Nike Elite that are modern in cut but traditional in feel.
"Nike did a great job working with us to come up with a look unique to OU," said Sooners head coach Jeff Capel. "We wanted to create our own state-of-the-art look while preserving a classic feel, and I think we accomplished that. Our players really seem to like the new design."
The home white and road crimson uniforms sport a cut similar to the ones the Sooners wore last year, but showcase completely new trim. Double stripes are featured on both sides of the jerseys and shorts, resembling those on the OU football team's pants. An OU logo was added to the lower left shorts front, "OKLAHOMA" now appears above the numbers on the jersey front (replacing the "SOONERS" that was used last year) and a schooner wheel adorns the middle of the front waistline.
Also back following a one-year hiatus are last names on the backs of the jerseys. No gray is utilized on the new uniforms.
It's almost over and we just got started. The National League Division Series is already two games to one for both the Dodgers and Phillies.
LA hammered Chicago 10-3 while Philadelphia beat Milwaukee 5-2.
Both teams can wrap up their series on Saturday.

When you hear the term "student athlete" you should be thinking about our local schools and their players.
Tulsa, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma all had players named to various watch lists for academic and community awards. Take a look below for the stories and the names of the best of the best.
Be sure to look all the way to the end to find releases from all three schools.
Oct. 1, 2008
NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. It marks the third consecutive year that an Oklahoma player has been named to the prestigious squad.
Jacob Gutierrez was on the team in 2006 and Nic Harris received the honor in 2007.
"We're proud of the players who have represented us on the Good Works Team, and certainly Gerald is extremely deserving," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "The fact that he was voted a captain as a sophomore speaks to the respect Gerald has earned in our program. Others have noticed Gerald's selfless actions and integrity, and we are pleased that he also is receiving that recognition on the national level."
McCoy is currently serving as President of OU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In that position, he has made a number of speaking appearances at area elementary schools, a facility for underprivileged children and area high schools.
He also has worked on a home building project with the ABC show Extreme Makeover in Lawton, Okla., a project that re-built a home for a Ft. Sill soldier, who had been injured in Iraq, and his family after a series of misfortunes left the family facing unexpected challenges and mobility issues for the father and a young son.
McCoy served as the Freshman Liaison for OU's Bridge Builders, an organization that serves as an African-American Student-Athlete Network. In that position, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He also helped collect and distribute toys, gifts and food for underprivileged families in the Norman area.
He volunteered for two years with the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. He was a volunteer runner with the children in the completion of their run on race day and has helped at water stations out on the course.
The Oklahoma City native has been an active participant in the White Ribbon Campaign on the Norman campus. The program that denounces violence toward women and girls.
He has been a guest speaker for area Red Cross fund-raising and community service events and worked on a Habitat for Humanity home build with the Sooner football team. He has been a popular visitor to Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City, spending time with the patients and signing autographs.
Through an award that McCoy was nominated for in high school, he has had the opportunity to speak at teen summits in the Los Angeles area. Presented by the National Alliance of African American Athletes, the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy Award is the nation's first and only award to recognize outstanding achievement in athletics, scholarship, and community service by African-American male high school seniors.
The 22 college football players awarded this prestigious honor were selected by a committee from the 71 nominations submitted by sports information directors on behalf of their teams. The two 11-member teams - one composed of players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) and a combined team representing the NCAA Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III and the NAIA - honor players that embody the true spirit of "teamwork" and "giving back" through selfless contributions and commendable acts of kindness.
This is the 17th consecutive season the Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams® have been selected, and the first that Allstate has partnered with the AFCA to present the awards.
"Allstate is proud to partner with the AFCA to highlight the extraordinary efforts of these student athletes," said Lisa Cochrane, vice president of marketing for Allstate. "Giving back to our communities is a value Allstate holds dear, and having the opportunity to recognize these young men for the service they've provided off the field is an honor for us."
From donating bone marrow to rescuing children from an overturned bus, the positive impact that these players have made and continue to make on their communities can be measured by more than just touchdowns, tackles, and receptions.
"These 22 student-athletes represent thousands of college football players who make a difference in their communities through volunteer service on campus and in their hometowns," said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. "We're proud to join Allstate in recognizing these young people who are dedicated to improving the world in which we live."
Allstate has assembled a high-profile voting panel made up of previous Good Works Team® members, including former University of Mississippi running back Deuce McAllister and former University of Georgia lineman Matt Stinchcomb, as well as prominent college football media personalities, including ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit and CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd, to elect this year's teams. Also a part of the selection committee are current AFCA president and University of Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham, 1996 AFCA president and former head coach at the United States Air Force Academy Fisher DeBerry, and Allstate senior vice president Steve Sorenson.
In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing. Candidates must also display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Neither athletic ability nor on-the-field achievements are among the selection criteria.
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State linebacker Seb Clements is a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy presented by HealthSouth, which is presented annually by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame to the college football player who stands out as the best in the country for his combined academic success, football success and leadership in the community, it was announced today.
Clements is one of 57 semifinalists from Football Bowl Subdivision teams and one of only seven Big 12 players to earn a spot on the list of semifinalists. As a Draddy Trophy semifinalist, Clements is also a candidate for the 2008 NFF National Scholar- Athlete Awards.
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. Established to honor former NFF Chairman Vincent dePaul Draddy, a Manhattan College quarterback who developed the Izod and Lacoste brands, the award comes with a 25- pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.
"The Draddy semifinalists represent everything good about college football," said NFF President & CEO Steven J. Hatchell. "They are another fine example of how football builds leaders, and it is the NFF's duty to promote their accomplishments while encouraging future generations of gridiron standouts to aim high on and off the football field."
The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on Oct. 29. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2008 National Scholar- Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. The Draddy winner, who will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship, will be announced at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on December 9 at the prestigious Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. A total distribution of more than $300,000 in scholarships will be awarded that evening.
Launched in 1959, the NFF scholar-athlete program became the first initiative in history to credit a player for both academic and athletic accomplishments. The Draddy, first awarded in 1990, adds to the program's mystique, having previously honored two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar finalist and a Heisman winner. The University of Texas's Dallas Griffin was named the 2007 Draddy recipient.
Notable NFF National Scholar-Athlete alumni include NFL standout Derrick Brooks (Florida State); actor Mark Harmon (UCLA); NASA astronaut Leland Melvin (Richmond); former Dateline NBC anchor Stone Phillips (Yale); chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters Tournament, Billy Payne (Georgia); famed NFL quarterback Steve Young (BYU); and Heisman Trophy winners Terry Baker (Oregon State), Gary Beban (UCLA); Doug Flutie (Boston College) and Danny Wuerffel (Florida
Tulsa's Wilson Holloway Nominated for the FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award
The offensive tackle was diagnosed with cancer last March
Dallas, Texas (FWAA) -- The University of Tulsa's Wilson Holloway is this week's nominee for the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl/FWAA Courage Award, to be announced at the end of the season. Holloway, a red-shirt freshman offensive lineman from Oklahoma City, was diagnosed with cancer last spring, underwent chemotherapy treatment throughout the spring and summer, and is playing on special teams and in a reserve role for the Golden Hurricane.
Holloway was considered to have a bright future, but Tulsa coaches were concerned when he had trouble during a spring workout. He struggled to breathe after sprints.
"I just thought I was out of shape," Holloway told the Tulsa World.
But tests revealed a softball-sized tumor, which was diagnosed as Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Holloway had difficulty breathing because the tumor was pressing against his lungs.
Holloway began undergoing biweekly chemo treatments March 21. Though he initially lost 20 pounds, he's regained that and added 20 more, up to 275.
Holloway did not participate in spring practice, but continued with conditioning workouts. He returned to practice for preseason camp and underwent his last chemo treatment on Aug. 22, eight days before the Golden Hurricane opened the season.
"He's just so tough and courageous," Tulsa coach Todd Graham told the newspaper. "He's always had a positive mindset and a game plan. He has done a good job of whipping (cancer) so far."
Holloway played his prep football at Oklahoma Christian University, where he was a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter. He played on the offensive and defensive lines and at tight end during his high school career. As a senior, he totaled 98 tackles, eight sacks and three fumble recoveries from his defensive tackle position.
For the third straight year, the Football Writers Association of America and the FedEx Orange Bowl will announce a weekly nominee each Wednesday during the season. A blue-ribbon panel will determine the winner from all of the nominees. The winner of the FedEx Orange Bowl/FWAA Courage Award will be announced in December and be presented with the trophy.
The Courage Award was created by ESPN The Magazine's senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, also a FWAA member. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.
Previous winners of the FWAA's Courage Award are Navy's Zerbin Singleton (2007), Clemson's Ray Ray McElrathbey (2006), the Tulane football team (2005), Memphis' Haracio Colen (2004), San Jose State's Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo's William Bratton (2002).
