US Rep. John Sullivan returns from rehab, exclusive interview with Joe Kelley
I had the opportunity to spend 20 minutes with US Rep. John Sullivan Thursday (7/02) afternoon. Like other Tulsa-area constituents, I had neither seen nor spoken to Congressman Sullivan in over a month since he admitted himself to the Betty Ford Clinic in California for treatment to alcohol addiction. He and I had NO prearranged rules for the interview. I was recording our dialogue from the moment he walked into the room. Beginning Monday here on KRMG, listen as we playback the discussion with Sullivan. During our 20 minutes, I asked him about:
- What one thing made him realize it was time to go to rehab
- How did your wife and kids react to your rehab absence
- The rumors of DUIs which crop up during each campaign
- The impact this admission will have on his political career
- The reaction from House leadership and other members of the OK Congressional delegation
- Being absent during the Cap and Trade House vote
- What life was like in Betty Ford
- Whether there were any criminal charges or episodes that forced the rehab experience
It was the first time in many dialogues I have had with John Sullivan in which I actually felt like there was genuine human compassion behind his eyes. I felt the personal relief that he must be experiencing knowing that there is no longer a big secret to hide. He knows full well that there are Democrats and Republicans alike who are disappointed, outraged, insulted by his behavior and addiction. He is also hearing from many who are sympathetic and proud of his admission and drive to deal with it.
KRMG will air an exclusive series all week with Congressman Sullivan and you can also hear the entire interview by clicking here..
What others are saying
- John SullivanYou all would have crucified this guy if he would have been a democrat...But you put him up and make everything ok since he is one of your own.
- AWOL REPBottom line to all the nattering naybobs and naysayers promoting Sullivan. This is not a good time for our representative to be hanging out in sunny California while rome burns. I believe I've read where this guy's had accuations of alcohol abuse for years. The repubs need to do a thorough background check on their next candidate.
- SullivanWe wish him the best, but i hope he is ready for the fight for our freedoms and liberties. Oklahoma 1st District must plow the way for core conservative values. Lower taxes, free enterprise and the right for an individual to fail and to succeed. The right of some to enjoy the fruits of his labors and not where the government takes to redistribute. Our Representative must ensure government is out of the way of the people that created the beast.
- SullivanCongressman Sullivan's attempt at rehabilitation for alcohol addiction is respectable. Now if he could just seek rehabilitation on his abysmal voting record on issues important to Oklahoma.
The road to recovery Congressman Sullivan is to listen to your constituency and start voting for measures that make sense in lieu of being popular with your cohorts. - Conressman Sullivan's Recoveryin response to the earlier comment about us republicans needing to find a new candidate, I must respectfully disagree. He showed great determination to his country and family by going to recieve "Grade A" treatment in California, and from the majority of the calls his office recieved, makes me belive he wont only hit the ground running but is going to shake things up and battle for our values as never before.
- ASWOL RepWhy did he have to go all the way to California for rehab? Is it because of the special perks Congress gets that they get to lay around the country clubs to sober up? Probably because they have better insurance than the poor taxpayers supporting them. Heck, if it was alcohol he could have checked in to St Francis or St John's right here in Tulsa. Maybe he was really hiking the Appalachian trail or visiting some place like Argentina. Anyway, it looks like republicans need to find them a "clean and sober" candidate for the next election. Good Luck!
- I can't wait to hear itI've been wondering about Sullivan's "status"...I'll be listening Monday morning!
