Inconclusive DNA Evidence
30 years later and there is still no DNA and no answers. In 1977, three girl scouts were sexually assaulted and murdered in Mayes County. Last year, evidence collected in the case was sent for testing to try and extract DNA evidence from an anal swab from one of the victims and pillowcases from the scene. Now, Mayes County District Attorney Gene Haynes says those tests were inconclusive. Haynes in an interview with KRMG explains what is next, "The case stays where it has been for the past 30 years. It will be considered an unsovled case because the prime suspect was acquitted at trial."
He says Gene Leroy Hart was arrested for the crimes but aquitted. Haynes admits the identity of the killer may never be known. He explains the most recent round of testing for DNA used up the entire swab from one of the victims which means there is nothing else to test in the future. Haynes says he is disappointed with the lack of results for the families of the three young girls who were murdered.
