OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City immigration attorney Doug Stump has been elected secretary of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Stump will work with U.S. business leaders and politicians in pushing for comprehensive immigration reform.

Stump is a vocal critic of Oklahoma's House Bill 1804, which is considered one of the nation's toughest anti-illegal immigration laws.

Stump says state governments don't need to be meddling in the issue. Instead, citizens need to be bringing pressure on Congress to provide immigration reform.

Stump's motivation for running for office stem from his Oklahoma experiences, assisting businesses and other immigration lawyers in addressing proposed legislation similar to HB 1804.

One of his primary goals, he says, will be to ensure other legislators do not mimic the Oklahoma statute.

I hope Mr. Stump is successful. The country needs more immigrants to backfill the dwindling tax base resulting from retiring boomers, not to mention the admirable work ethic common to most immigrants.

Congratulations Mr. Stump. I hope you initiate action fast. The country is in a mess with concerned employers and job losses. A good immigration reform will stabilize the country and the economy. A lot of people are affected with the current laws. People legally granted visas to the U.S. and their dependent spouses but restrictions not to work or study is frustrating and killing. It is better not to grant a visa to the dependents so that they can be happy in their own home country rather than allow them here and frustrate them mentally and physically by stripping them of their identity and human rights with no temp ID, SSN, EAD, thus preventing them to a decent living.
