Alaska tribe drops gambling appeal
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The chairman of the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association says an Alaska tribe's decision to drop an appeal could be good news for casinos in the Sooner State.
Chairman David Qualls says he believes the Metlakatla Indian Community's decision to withdraw its appeal ended a dispute involving the distinction between certain types of casino games.
At issue is the whether a so-called bright line needs to be drawn between Class Two gambling devices, essentially bingo and similar games, and Class Three devices such as slots, which can be operated only under a tribal-state compact.
However, National Indian Gaming Commission chairman Philip Hogen disagrees with Qualls' interpretation.
He says his rejection of ``one-touch'' electronic bingo machines is the most current action by the commission.
The Alaska tribe had appealed that decision and believes that it does not affect other tribes because the full commission didn't act on it.
