Fire department joins the FOP in opposing the street plan

Not only is Tulsa's Fraternal Order of Police against the 12-year $2 billion street fix plan, so is the Tulsa fire department.  The groups agree the streets need to be fixed but not with this plan.  Tulsa Fire Captain Michael Baker says the fire department will lose access to a short term capital account.  He explains that short term capital pays for vehicles for the department to use and does not include fire trucks.  Since the fire stations are also living areas, the account pays for things like stoves or refrigerators that need to be replaced.  "That money is going over to the general fund.  It will have to be feed over into the general fund and that is where the trimming starts coming.  When we deal with the city budget tied to the general fund, as it is, we begin to lose some of that funding."  Baker says no one is saying the fire department's budget will be cut but the reality is with every city department wanting part of the general fund- there is never enough money to go around.
