LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - A Lawton woman has been hospitalized after being attacked by a large pit bull inside her home.

Firefighters and paramedics called to a northwest Lawton residence about 2:30 yesterday found the 48-year-old victim with severe bites on her arms, thighs, legs and face.

The dog's owner kept the animal in the backyard while emergency responders cared for the woman, whose name and medical condition weren't released.

Animal welfare superintendent Rose Wilson says the dog has been deemed dangerous and was taken to the Lawton Animal Shelter, where it will be kept until officials can speak with the victim.

Wilson says the normal protocol for handling a dangerous animal is for the owner to decide to sign the animal over to the City or to fulfill requirements to keep a dangerous dog.

Those include a properly locked enclosure to confine a dangerous dog and a liability insurance policy or surety bond of no less than $50,000 for any personal injuries inflicted by the animal.

What others are saying

  • Stupid Much?
Wow, what a ridiculous post. People correctly identify the dog as a rottweiler mix, and so Don Bishop, the writer of this article, removes the picture.

I can't even begin to describe the utter stupidity of the poster. Please, do us all a favor, and get a life. Pit Bulls don't need idiots like you giving them a bad rep.
  • The real story: the dog thought the victim was an intruder
I guess if you want the truth, you have to do it yourself. I called Rose Wilson at Lawton animal control and the owners of the dog (that has been since been destroyed).

The victim was a relative only living in the house for one week. She mistakenly entered an area where the dogs were. The white and brown pit bull mistakenly thought she was an intruder. The dog was protecting the family home. This was human error, plain and simple--but the dog paid with its life. • They - the media - don't HAVE to try giving pits a bad name. They do enough of that on their own. Pits are mongrel dogs that have been inbred and bred to have aggressive tendencies. People can deny it all they want, but there's a reason Bloodhounds are the way they are and Border Collies the way they are and Pits the way they are. It's been bred into them.

I don't deny people the right to own them, but they shouldn't whine when yet another report of a pit/pit mix attack/death occurs.
  • Photo is not a pit bull dog
If the photo accompnaying this story is the dog accused of the attack, you had better improve your fact checking. Indeed the pit bull hysteria makes for lots of web hits. But the dog that you have pictured is no doubt a Rottweiler.

Please correct your error. The story is about a Rottweiler attack--but geeze no web traffic for that!

  • Woman mauled by large pit bull
The dog in the photo is a rotweiller or rotweiller mix. There is no pit bull in that dog. Stop giving pit bulls a bad name for crying out loud.
