Large fire burning in Dewey County
TALOGA, Okla. (AP) - Residents of Taloga were evacuated from their homes and moved to a neighboring town after a large wildfire raged in the area.
Vici Emergency Management Director Jan Gray says a firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene last night, but there were no other reports of injuries.
Gray says a mobile home may have been burned but she hadn't heard of any more structural damage.
Authorities went door-to-door this afternoon and urged people to leave their homes as the blaze approached Taloga and U.S. 270 from the south and west.
Gray says firefighters were able to contain the blaze a mile before it reached the town of about 400, but resident couldn't return because it was still burning.
She says the Red Cross has set of a shelter in Seiling for residents.
The blaze was so large at one point, it stretched from near the north part of the county to the south. Ash fell from the blaze in Enid, which is about 50 miles to the northeast.
Gray says winds gusted to 45 miles per hour earlier today but had subsided some by nightfall. (file photo)
