Recession Won't Snow-In Sand Springs
The saying goes, 'The mother of invention is necessity' and you can look to Sand Springs to prove that true. Sand Springs needed a 4th snow plow and sander for its fleet but with the recession and budget cuts there is no money to buy equipment. So the city's maintenance division went to work. Fleet Maintenance Supervisor Brandon Barnes says workers took parts from two different vehicles and crafted a 'new' snow plow. He says they worked over a period of months when they had time. In fact, he noted how his job has changed in recent years.
"When I got hired on, this was more of a preventive maintenance facility. But with the knowledge of my technicians, we have decided there is nothing we can not accomplish but it takes the involvement of everybody," says Barnes.
He adds the 'new' plow was rebuilt for about $2,000 and about three weeks of sweat equity.
