Sales tax proposed to benefit police, fire, parks
TULSA, Ok. - AM 740 and FM 102.3 News/Talk KRMG's Steve Berg poses this question: Would you pay another one penny in sales tax to help pay for police, fire and parks? Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson reportedly wants to put that idea on the ballot and let the people decide. The other councilors aren't so sure, though five councilors say they're against it and three, like Bill Christiansen, are undecided. Christiansen says, "Because, you know, you just can't throw money at a problem and make it go away. You've got to think of better things than that." He says, for example, we could raise a lot of money. A majority of the council would have to approve it before it's put to a vote of the people. The extra penny would reportedly raise an estimated $66-million per year. What others are saying
- LessonsHave me not learned our lesson from our current situation?
- Can't ResistTypical political solution - Throw something totaly unrelated into the mix as a rider. Why are we considering Parks at a time when the real obligation of protecting the public is at issue? Every Park in the City's budget should be shut down before they even THINK about laying off police & firemen. The City's primary mission should be to protect - not entertain.
- stable income from taxwhy don't we increase our property tax by 1/2 cent for Police and Fire. Then we could lower our sales tax by a full cent.
- taxesWhy don't we lower the sales tax and add a onehalf cent tax to the property tax. Politations arre scared to death of lower any tx!!
- sales tax proposalNo new taxes!! Why is it that the rest of the country has to deal with layoffs and pay cuts, but the police and fire fighters don't?
