TULSA, Ok. - The City Council is expected to override the Mayor's veto. They agree on what's in the budget, but not how to pay for it. Talking with the KRMG Morning News just moments ago, Mayor Bartlett says council is wrong to think sales tax revenues alone will do the job. "They're assuming that the economy is going to be okay. I don't think we're in a position where prudently we should do that," Bartlett says. Instead, he wants to implement his so-called revenue enhancements. For example, increases in monthly water bills, parking fine increases and charging residents' insurance plans for fire calls.

What others are saying

  • Spending cuts would be nice
I flat-out don't believe that there aren't places in the budget that could be cut without looking at raising utility bills.

Aside from that, I think the mayor's right. The sales tax revenues are simply not a reliable source of income in this economy, and the council is idiotic if they think that a minimal bump over a couple of months signals that everything can go back to normal.
  • Override Mayors Veto
The Council should, and is correct to over ride the Mayors Veto. For one thing, citizens are already paying for fire calls in their property taxes. Revenue Enhancements is just another word for more taxes and fees. If the Mayor charges the Insurance carriers for fire calls that will just trickle down to the home owner paying higher insurance rates. Home owners would be paying twice. His only answer is higher fees and taxes, thats all he knows how to do. Dig deeper into the taxpayers pocket. It would be more practical and cost effective to hire a city manager and get rid of the Mayor and his over paid staff. Think of the money and headaches the city would prevent. Get a City Manager who can manage the city's finances, and not use a shotgun effect like the Mayor does. Also separate him of control over the Police and Fire budget process. He should have no control over Police and Fire oprations. Police and Fire should never be on the table for cuts....period. A City Manager is looking better huh!!!
