Local Father Reacts to Mishandling & Mislabeling at Arlington National
A Missouri Senator says there could be as many as 6,600 graves at Arlington National Cemetery that are unmarked or mislabeled because managers did not do their job properly. That is much higher than the estimate last month from Army investigstors, who said 211 remains were affected.
Gary Zapasnik of Broken Arrow buried his son at Arlington National Cemetery in early 2009. He does not believe the grave of Specialist Stephen Zapasnik is involved in the scandal still he is angry that such a thing could happen.
"If I were to speak to those people face to face it would be rather harsh," says Zapasnik.
Specialist Stephen Zapasnik was19 years old when he died in Baghdad after a road collapsed and the humvee he was in rolled into a canal.
Zapasnik says he buried his son and then a few months later returned to Arlington National Cemetery to see his son's grave marker.
He says his son made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
"It is more important than anything that these people be honored for many reasons and the people who are in charge of those things should have realized that and taken extra care. Whether it was a mistake or not, I don't know but in any case it should never have been allowed to happen," says Zapasnik.
