Powerless Weekend Possible
(Oklahoma City, OK) -- At one point yesterday, more than 70 thousand homes in the Tulsa area were in the dark yesterday after storms rolled across the state. The 80-mile-per-hour winds knocked out power lines and damaged office buildings in downtown Tulsa. Officials with AEP-PSO say some customers could be without power this weekend because a number of lines and poles will need to be replaced. Parts of Oklahoma City could also be without power until the weekend according to officials with OG&E. The Oklahoma City area was also battered by the storm which dropped hail in several places causing damage to cars, homes and buildings. Several traffic accidents in the state are also being blamed on the thunderstorm.
Farm Accident Sets Off Fire
(Piedmont, OK) -- A farm accident sparked a blaze that nearly consumed an entire wheat field. The fire began when a wheat harvest combine ran into an electrical box Monday afternoon on a farm. The flames swept across an estimated 70 acres of a 100-acre wheat field before Piedmont fire crews got things under control. A little more than 30 acres had already been harvested when the fire began. The financial cost to the farmer is high as each acre of wheat can produce up to 40-bushels which sell for about $3.75 each. Oklahoma Wheat Commission Executive Director Mike Hodges estimates the total from the fire to be more than $10-thousand.
Elderly Man Dies In Car Crash
(Claremore, OK) -- An 82-year-old Claremore man died in a car wreck Tuesday morning. Robert Burrow Junior was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which took place in the intersection of Lynn Riggs and J.M. Davis Boulevards. The car Burrow was driving was crushed by a tractor-trailer at 10:30 a.m. So far, the cause of the accident is still under investigation by Claremore Police.
Archaeologists Digging Site
(Newkirk, OK) -- A park of Oklahoma's past is being slowly uncovered in a remote area of Kay County near the town of Newkirk. A number of archaeologists are spending the month uncovering an 18th-century village, serving as a trading point for the Wichita tribe. It is believed the village was the site for trading with early French explores. The Archaeologists are hoping to find traces of beehive houses and other artifacts from the tribe 300 years ago. The University of Oklahoma Anthropology Department, Oklahoma State University Sociology Department and Oklahoma Anthropological Society are working together on the dig.
Cold Case Of Robbery
(Norman, OK) -- Police in Norman are on the lookout for criminal with a sweet tooth that pulled of a cold crime. The Eskimo Sno snow cone stand was the victim of a burglary over the holiday weekend. Located in the 17-hundred block of Lindsey Street, the store damage and loss is reported to be less than $100. The business owners reported $50 in damage was done to the business and the loss of several bottles of sweet syrup is estimated to be $40. So far no suspects have been identified as the investigation continues.
PETA Calling For Prosecution
(Oklahoma City, OK) -- The animal rights group PETA says it has sent a letter to prosecutors urging the vigorous prosecution of those charged in a dog-fighting ring. The letter sent to Assistant District Attorney Linda Evans says anyone capable of this kind of cruelty is a serious risk to animals and humans. A total of 22 people face charges in the dog fighting and drug ring after a year-and-a-half-long investigation by federal, state and local law enforcement. More than 140 pit-bull dogs along with guns and illegal drugs were confiscated. It is expected that more than 125 of the dogs are in such poor health that they will have to be destroyed.
Red Hawks Struggle
(Oklahoma City, OK) -- The Oklahoma Red Hawks are anything but road hawks this season as they lose to Omaha 9-3 yesterday. The Royals blasted four runs in the third inning to blow the game open and never looked back. The Red Hawks are now 3-3 on the current trip and 30-23 on the season. The good news is that they still have a three-and-a-half-game, first-place division lead over the Nashville Sounds. Oklahoma is 1-3 in the last four games and have given up a total of 39 runs.
Drillers Game Rained Out
(Tulsa, OK) -- Mother Nature forced a rain out of the game between the Tulsa Drillers and Frisco Rough Riders last night in Tulsa. The good news for fans is that means a doubleheader is on tap for today as they make up the game. Officials have decided the teams will play a pair of seven-inning games tonight with the first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. Free general admission tickets for last night's game can be used for both games tonight.
