Super PAC running more ads in Tulsa to boost Cornett’s name recognition

Oklahoma News | KRMG (Russell Mills)

TULSA — A Super PAC has launched a second media campaign touting Oklahoma City mayor Mick Cornett’s gubernatorial run, and its ads have focused exclusively on the Tulsa market.

The technical term for a Super PAC is “independent expenditure-only committee.”

They are allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money promoting or opposing political candidates.

They are, however, barred by law from coordinating or even communicating with the candidates.

The Super PAC called "Oklahoma Values" is chaired by a Tulsa cardiologist, Dr. Darwin Childs.

But when KRMG reached out to Oklahoma Values, it was Dan Conston who returned the call.

He identified himself as a senior adviser to the Super PAC; his firm, Conston Communications, is a political media and consulting company based in Washington, D.C.

He confirmed the ad buys, and that they target the Tulsa market exclusively.

The reason is simple, he told KRMG.

“In Oklahoma City, he is exceptionally well-known, and popular,” Conston said. “So we think that we can play the most constructive role now in helping boost Mick by telling his story to conservatives elsewhere in the state that don’t know him as well, and Tulsa is the initial focus that we’re doing.”

The first ad buy, beginning in late December and ending with a spot during the Rose Bowl, totaled about $100,000.

The second campaign began late last week, and according to figures on the Super PAC’s website, will cost about $90,000.

KRMG's research indicates the company that purchased the ad buys was Sandler-Innocenzi, based in Alexandria, Virginia.

And some conservatives have noted that by far, the primary donor to Oklahoma Values as listed on the state ethics commission website is Sue Ann Arnall, ex-wife of Oklahoma oil tycoon Harold Hamm and known for fundraising efforts that include a recent event held for Democratic VP candidate Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

Conston told KRMG, simply, “she’s a donor to Oklahoma Values.”

Pressed for details, he added that “I’m not her spokesman,” but went on to admit “she has a background of bipartisan giving.”

He said her donations “are a testament to just how good Mick’s record as mayor has been, because he’s a proven conservative, and yet he’s bridging the ideological gap and drawing support from the staunchest of conservatives, to moderates. We’re proud to have donors all across the political spectrum that support Mick.”

Cornett faces a crowded GOP field in the June 26th primary for governor, and some of his opponents have a lot more name recognition in the Tulsa metro.

So he’ll likely need some support from outside the GOP core to succeed in the primary.
