Oklahomans know to be on guard during the spring season when chances for severe weather and tornadoes are highest.
They may not be as familiar with another time of year when conditions can lead to strong to severe storms, even tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service, “The change of seasons to fall can bring stronger weather systems to this area, which can provide a more favorable environment for severe weather, including tornadoes.”
The National Weather Service also says tornadoes during the fall months tend to be fast moving. That can be especially dangerous when you consider how much earlier darkness falls this time of year.
National Weather Service data shows October is the fifth most common month for tornadoes in Oklahoma. In fact, October 2021 set a new record with 34 tornadoes in Oklahoma.

The month of May has the most tornadoes on record, followed by April, June, March and then October.
