TULSA, Okla. — A U.S District judge has sentenced 40-year-old Monica Thompson from Tulsa to four years in prison for identity theft.

Thompson was sentenced for two counts of aggravated identity theft after she was convicted of stealing the identity of a disabled Army veteran.

According to court documents, Thompson and her boyfriend arranged a fake marriage to the victim. Thompson submitted fake applications to the Veterans Administration to get control of the victim’s disability checks.

The victim, despite being eligible for disability payments, was living in an RV without food. The victim attempted suicide, was hospitalized and placed on suicide watch.

While on suicide watch, court documents claim Thompson was still sending false documents to the VA, and a nurse overheard the victim sharing their banking information with Thompson. The nurse reported it to the authorities.

“Taking advantage of a veteran that served our country will never be tolerated in the Northern District of Oklahoma,” said U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. “Thompson not only engaged in identity theft but also took advantage of a vulnerable disabled veteran for her own benefit.”

On top of her four year sentence, Thompson was ordered by a judge to pay $29,440.39 in restitution.
