Local seniors enjoy baking traditional European holiday cookies

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — A group of seniors at Asher Point Independent Living enjoyed baking holiday cookies, sharing family memories, and singing last week.

The group made Polish Kolaczki — a Polish jam cookie — and Swedish Christmas cookies together. The jam cookies were made from a recipe one resident, Alice, learned as a child.

Alice guided her peers through the recipe and shared stories of her making the dessert with her family. The Lifestyles Director even taught the group a song as they sprinkled the cookies with powdered sugar.

“We’ve been doing holiday baking all December but having Alice teach the Polish recipe while sharing her family history made that session stand out,” said Cameron Gruenberg, Divisional Director of Sales and Marketing at Asher Point Independent Living of Bartlesville. “The Swedish Christmas cookies gave everyone those classic holiday flavors they know, while the Kolaczki introduced most of them to something completely new. Our Lifestyles Director’s singing trick for the powdered sugar turned the Polish session into a performance.”

There were two baking sessions in total, and each gave Asher Point residents the opportunity to learn about European holiday traditions. The Swedish cookie session focused mainly on holiday recipes that use orange zest, vanilla, ginger, and cinnamon.
