A group of students at Nathan Hale High School staged a walk out in protest of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and President Donald Trump Thursday, congregating in front of the school.
At around 11 a.m., the students walked out of class and stood along 21st Street with signs, chanting messages, sometimes vulgar messages, directed at ICE and President Trump. Cars were driving by honking in support, and some stopped in the middle of the road to video the students, which was, at times, dangerous. Several teachers were on hand to direct traffic, and the kids roared when anyone honked their horn in support.
Students from the school called several news outlets to inform of their intentions to walk out. The children were also holding signs that read “No one is illegal on stolen land” as well as “F— Trump” and “F— ICE.” The protest only last around 45 minutes and stopped around lunchtime.
KRMG reached out to a representative from Tulsa Public Schools who was informed of the protest. They are expected to release a statement.
Statement from Tulsa Public Schools:
“Today, Tulsa Public Schools students at sites including Edison Preparatory Academy and Hale High School held student-led demonstrations outside each of their schools. We have guidance in place that allows students to safely demonstrate while minimizing disruption to learning. Designated areas vary by site and are selected to prioritize student safety. We are aware of reports of profanity and inappropriate language. We take these reports seriously and will respond according to established expectations for student behavior, conduct, and disciplinary protocols.’
