Man charged in deadly east Tulsa stabbing

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department said a man has been charged with second-degree murder after a stabbing victim died in the hospital.

Police said on Feb. 19 around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a call regarding a man found lying on the sidewalk near East 35th Street and Memorial Drive.

The victim, 53-year-old Robert Shearhart, was taken to the hospital.

Video from the area showed 34-year-old Matthew Kernal getting into a fight with Shearhart before stabbing him in the head and running away.

Detectives tracked down Kernal and arrested him on Feb. 21. Shearhart died in the hospital on Feb. 27.

Police said Kernal is a tribal member and falls under the McGirt ruling. Federal authorities charged have him with second-degree murder.

This is Tulsa’s fifth homicide of 2026.
