TULSA, Okla. — Saturday night, Tulsa Police were called out to 31st and Riverside near Discovery lab for a robbery.
Tulsa Police arrested a 14-year-old who they said used a stolen gun to rob another teenager.
“You’ve got a 14-year-old playing basketball, hanging out, talking about the Gathering Place over there by the Discovery Lab…who’s basically robbing someone at gunpoint, taking the gun out, actually sticking to this person’s ribs and taking their money,” said Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg.
Capt. Meulenberg said the teenage suspect was found with a 9mm pistol tucked in his pocket on the basketball courts across the street with other teenagers.
“Of all the reported guns we had this last year, 58% were stolen out of vehicles,” said Meulenberg. “So if people could just eliminate that part, then maybe something like this — [a] 14-year-old getting a hold of a stolen gun — would be eliminated.”
“Right now, we’re just handling all crime as crime,” Meulenberg said. “Of you’re a 14-year-old committing a robbery, we’re going to arrest the same as we would if you’re a 40-year-old. The difference goes to where the court system lies.”
He said that TPD has recovered some of the money stolen in the robbery.
