Tulsans flock to stores to buy final winter gear

TULSA, Okla. —As the entirety of Green Country braces for the incoming winter storm, several Tulsans flocked to stores to buy their final pieces of winter gear.

One store that’s seen a large increase in customers is Sun & Ski Sports near East 71st Street and Memorial Drive.

“It’s been awesomely busy and we’re so excited that we’re getting everybody ready for this great snow storm that we’re about to have,” said Lori Rodriguez, a Manager at Sun & Ski Sports. “We have everything from…winter socks to base layers to snow boots to jackets to gloves to beanies to neck gators and then can’t forget the sleds. Those went the first day everybody was preplanning.”

One customer explained what he ducked into Sun & Ski Sports to grab before the snow begins.

“I’m shopping for gloves for my kids,” said Jerod Stanton. “I know they’re going to want to be out playing in it. We already have a sled. We’re ready to go! We just need a few more things to make sure that they stay warm.”

Rodriguez said a lot of people are buying items to help their kids have a fun time in the snow.

“I would say the kids snow boots has probably been one of the biggest draws. If your hands and feet are cold, it doesn’t make for a fun time out in the snow. We’ve sold hundreds of pairs of boots and definitely hundreds of sleds.”

However, Rodriguez reminded everyone that it’s important to dress yourself and your kids properly before heading outside.

“The base layer is one of your most important pieces and you can see that I’m standing here in front of some Smartwool. That’s what you put against your skin. You don’t want to wear anything cotton, so be sure that you’re not letting your kids or adults, anybody, getting out there with cotton against their skin because you’re doing active things and your body starts to perspire. Then the moisture sticks, so you want the moisture to wick away from your body. We sell all types of base layers from Smartwool to Hot Chillys to the Mountain Tek.”

Among the frenzied preparation, an excitement is growing for some Oklahomans.

Stanton explained, “I get excited. I like it. To me, it’s fun. I can’t wait to see my kids and the joy in their face when they get to get on the sled and go down the hills.”
