COLLINSVILLE, Okla. — The Collinsville Police Department participated in an important training session led by Cory Sutton with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Sutton led the officers through a course focused on teaching law enforcement agents the best ways to de-escalate and handle situations involving people with autism.

Sutton showed CPD officers how to better understand the difference between a meltdown versus a tantrum, how to improve communication, how to recognize the signs of autism, and more.

“We would like to thank Cory Sutton with the Oklahoma Department of Mental health and Substance Abuse for providing Autism for Law Enforcement training to all of CPD officers,’ said the department in a post shared to social media. “With autism affecting one in 36 children, this training is incredibly important.”
