GLENPOOL, Okla. — The City of Glenpool is set to begin construction on a major sidewalk and beautification project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and connectivity along 141st Street.

According to David Agbetunsin, the Chief Operations Officer for the City of Glenpool, the project will be installing new sidewalks along 141st Street between Elwood Avenue and Peoria Avenue, which will help close longstanding sidewalk gaps in the area.

“This is the Glenpool Sidewalk and Beautification Project,” said Agbetunsin. “It provides sidewalk from Elwood to Peoria on 141st.”

The base bid includes:

  • Sidewalk construction on the north side of 141st Street between Elwood and Peoria
  • Extension of north sidewalks along Peoria Avenue from 141st Street to the South County Recreational Center
  • Sidewalk installation on the south side of 141st Street between Elwood and Peoria

City officials said the area includes surrounding neighborhoods and businesses that currently lack continuous pedestrian pathways.

“What we’re doing is basically filling those sidewalk gaps and providing pedestrian access to our citizens and our students.”

The project is funded through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant.

The construction bid came in at approximately $1.88 million and the work is expected to last until about late November.

Design work began some time ago, and the City has now secured the necessary TAP funding to move the project fully into the construction phase.

As construction begins, contractors will install traffic control devices along:

  • 141st Street between Elwood Avenue and Peoria Avenue
  • Peoria Avenue from 141st Street to the South County Recreational Center

Traffic will be maintained in both directions throughout the duration of the project. However, drivers should expect construction activity in the corridor and are encouraged to use caution, watch for signage and remain alert for crews working in the area.

The City has made the full traffic plan available online for any residents who are seeking additional details.

While sidewalks are the primary focus, the project will also incorporate beautification elements, including decorative lighting.

City leaders emphasize that the improvements are about more than aesthetics. The new sidewalks will be ADA-compliant, providing accessibility for residents of all abilities.

“We want to ensure that our kids, our students and our elderly can get from one point to another safely using sidewalks. This is important for us as a city and even as a region.”

Officials said the project represents a continued effort to enhance infrastructure, provide safety for vulnerable residents and strengthen connectivity across the growing community.
