BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — The Broken Arrow Freshman Academy held a Healthcare Career Day to show students what a career in the healthcare industry has to offer.

The day connects students with professionals who share their day-to-day experiences with them and work with them on hands-on projects. Students today worked on several way on how to stop a bleed.

“It’s so easy as a student to only know what you are typically exposed to and this allows them to see that when you think of healthcare, it’s not just physician or a nurse,” says Malinda Silva, Principal at Broken Arrow Freshman Academy. “There’s so many different facets and careeers that are available to them so that they understand they may fit somewhere within that pathway that they’re interested in that they didn’t know before.”

There were also lab technicians and radiologists at the event to get a more well-rounded look at the opportunities available.

Hannah, a freshman with the Academy says she is now more open to a career in the healthcare industry after today.

“I wasn’t before, but now it’s making me consider it more and thinking about what my life would be like.” she says.

Fletcher, another freshman said what he learned could help with a career he already had in mind.

“I’ve always been interested in firefighting and just helping people that need it, so this little thing we did will help me with that.” he said.

Silva emphasized that just being open to something new open students up for more opportunities in their future career paths.

“I hope that they take away that their possibilities are endless to them. Whether they go through this experience today and decide ‘Healthcare isn’t for me’ or they decide ‘Hey, I’m a little bit more interested in this’ that they start asking more question and doing more research about where they see themselves in the future so that they can make some informed decisions about where they want to go.” says Silva.
