Baker Mayfield Heisman statue revealed ahead of OU’s spring game

NORMAN, Okla. — Baker Mayfield’s Heisman statue was revealed in a special ceremony on Friday ahead of OU football’s spring game on Saturday to mixed reactions.

Mayfield will forever be immortalized in Heisman Park outside the University of Oklahoma’s football stadium, where his statue will be the sixth of seven Heisman Trophy winners from OU.

Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy in 2017 after leading the Sooners to a Big 12 Conference title and the College Football Playoffs. That season he threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns.

The Cleveland Browns selected Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Mayfield was joined by fellow Heisman winning Sooners quarterbacks Jason White, Sam Bradford and Kyler Murray. Former OU football coach Bob Stoops was also in attendance.

Although there’s a lot to celebrate in the dedication to Mayfield’s accomplishment, the buzz surrounding the statue was more about how the statue didn’t quite stack up in comparison to Mayfield.

Many on social media fail to see the resemblance between Mayfield and his bronze counterpart at all.

Mayfield’s been having some fun since being back in Norman. Tarahumaras in Norman tweeted that Mayfield jokingly “requested a trade” to the restaurant and included pictures of the quarterback filling out an application.

Mayfield applied for a busboy position and wrote that his pay rate was queso.
