BIXBY, Okla. — In four weeks parents whose children attend Bixby Public Schools will be voting on a $110 million bond issue to build a new High School Academic Building.
Bixby Public Schools Superintendent Rob Miller says the school district is one of the fastest growing school districts in the state of Oklahoma.
Miller says over the last decade they’ve gone from about 4,800 students to 7,400 students. He says that number is projected to reach 10,000 students by the end of the decade.
“We need additional classrooms, we need new buildings to make sure we’re ready to house those students,” he said during an interview on Wednesday morning.
If passed, the school bond would extend the current millage rate through 2032. The school bond will not increase school taxes.
Back in 2016, voters approved a $142 million dollar bond issue to embark on plans to build a new high school and improvements to all sites and district initiatives.
The school district is also embarking on a partnership with the city of Bixby to build a $43 million dollar performing arts center. The city has placed a bond proposal on the ballot for its residents to vote on February 8th.
If approved, the city bond would increase the city millage rate by about 4 mils, or about $50 a year on a $100,000 home.
Informational meetings about both bond issues will be held on January 19th at the North Intermediate Cafeteria, January 26th at the High School Auditorium and February 2nd at the West Campus Cafeteria. All meetings will be held at 6:30pm.
