Burglary suspect killed in officer-involved shooting on Will Rogers Turnpike in Claremore

CLAREMORE, Okla. — UPDATE (10/05; 8:55 p.m.) — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is now investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting following a police chase and crash on I-44 eastbound near Claremore.

OSBI confirmed to FOX23 that one person has died after Claremore Police and Rogers County Sheriff’s Office shot at the man who was suspected of multiple burglaries and stole a car.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) confirmed that Will Rogers Turnpike is back open.

UPDATE (10/05; 5:05 p.m.) — The Rogers County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to FOX23 that the man who escaped from a mental health facility and lead police on a chase on I-44 has been shot by Claremore Police officers and Rogers County Sheriff’s deputies.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton told FOX23 the man came out of hiding in a bush and “appeared to have something in his hand enough that there was a threat,” and officers and deputies took action and shot.

Claremore Police and the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a man who escaped from a mental health facility and is suspected of multiple burglaries in Claremore.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, Claremore Police said they were searching for a man suspected of multiple burglaries near Claremore High School, and the school was briefly put on lockdown while the search continued.

Police told FOX23 when police confined the search to a limited area, the lockdown was lifted. Police witnessed the suspect steal a car, and a police chase started.

The suspect evaded police, and the chase was called off. Claremore Police said they alerted agencies in surrounding areas to keep an eye out for the suspect. He was seen again driving on the Will Rogers Turnpike towards Joplin.

A second chase ensued, and it ended in a crash near mile marker 260 east bound, and police have set up a perimeter to search for the suspect.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol announced the Will Rogers turnpike has been shut down while law enforcement searches for the suspect.
