MCALESTER, Okla. — UPDATE (11/3) — The McAlester Army Ammunition plant is still gathering facts concerning the flash fire that occurred Tuesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those impacted by yesterday’s fire. The health and safety of our employees, our neighbors, and the local community remains our highest priority. The fire suppression system in the affected building worked and, with no doubt, saved lives,” the plant’s social media shared.
The employee that was transported to McAlester Regional Hospital was released and sent home the same night.
While the investigation is underway, operations at the affected production facility have been suspended.
MCAAP employs approximately 1,900 people.
There was a flash fire Tuesday afternoon at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in the production area. One employee was sent to the McAlester Regional Hospital for burns.
The other nine employees in the area were assessed at the site and did not require hospitalization. The fire suppression system in the building worked as designed and put out the fire. The situation was handled by the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant fire department.
McAlester AAP receives, stores, ships, produces, renovates and demilitarizes conventional ammunition. McAlester AAP provides Centralized Ammunition Management for training ammunition and contingency stocks for Army units in the Southwest region.
