BIG CABIN, Okla. — UPDATE ― Clean up crews are still on the scene after a major semitruck crash and fire Friday afternoon on I-44 westbound towards the Vinita Exit.
OHP reopened the area around 7 p.m. Friday, though traffic is still impacted by the clean up crew.
Big Cabin Fire Chief Kevin Oakley told FOX23 that it took firefighters four hours to contain the fire, but there were no one was killed in the accident. Nonfatal injuries were reported, and EMSA transported drivers involved in the accident to a hospital for treatment.
According to Oakley, one semitruck was carrying boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese and the other was carrying mostly paper products. This caused the fire to burn longer at the scene.
Big Cabin Fire worked with the Vinita Fire Department and the Carselowey Fire Department to contain the scene Friday.
“Everyone did a great job,” Oakley said. “We all worked really hard together at the scene.”
Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) closed I-44 west bound near the Vinita Exit after two semi trucks collided.
Both big rigs have caught fire and injuries have been reported.
OHP says the Big Cabin Fire Department is responding.
A viewer told FOX23 officers are diverting traffic off I-44 two miles ahead of the accident. She said she was driving eastbound and could feel the heat from the fire across the median.
