Big changes to Cox Cable channel lineup begin Wednesday

All digital channels will now be in the 1000's

Wednesday morning, Tulsa becomes the first city in the country to see the all new channel lineup on Cox Cable Television.

Cox's Bruce Berkinshaw tells KRMG he has been working toward that day for about four years.

For decades, new channels that were added to the system were basically just assigned to the next available number.

That has made it harder to find a specific genre or type of programming, and in some cases meant no correlation between the standard and high definition versions of the same network.

Those days will soon be over, at least in Tulsa.

Beginning December 10, 2014, all standard definition channels will be three digits; all high definition channels will be four digits, beginning at 1000.

Moreover, genres will be grouped together (see graphic).

So for example, sports fans will find ESPN standard at channel 300, ESPN HD at 1300, and so forth.

Local channels will be at familiar spots, with their HD versions exactly 1000 digits higher.

Berkinshaw knows there will be some confusion, at first, as people adjust to the change.

Still, he says, it's important to remember the goal. "We're going to (make) the channels much more intuitive, and easier to find."

The company's rolling out the change in Tulsa because "Tulsa is the pilot site for all of Cox Communications," he said. "So we're going to be doing all the learning...because we're going first."

By this time next year, Cox Cable will complete its conversion to 100 percent digital service.
