Bixby Public Schools will have a live graduation ceremony

BIXBY, Okla. — Bixby Public Schools announced they will host 3 live graduation ceremonies as restrictions on social gatherings loosen in the wake of COVID-19.

The district will now host a “ modified traditional event” at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, June 13th.

There will be three consecutive events, each including one-third of the BHS graduating class.

The three ceremonies will be conducted at 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm.

Bixby Public Schools Superintendent Rob Miller told KRMG attendees will be adhering to social distancing as well as wearing facemasks.

“Obviously, the safety and well-being of our students and our staff and our family members is the top priority,” Miller said.

Each senior will be allowed to invite up to ten guests to attend their ceremony.

The ceremonies will also be broadcast live to enable viewing by friends and family members who are unable to attend the event and/or belong to a vulnerable population.

Miller tells KRMG setting the graduation at Spartan Stadium, as well as having the event outside, will limit the potential spread of coronavirus during the event.

“We believe we can comply with restrictions while at the same time we can be in charge of the date, the time, the place. We also believe an outdoor event adds to the safety of our participants. There is not nearly enough evidence of the spread of the COVID virus in those outdoor opportunities.”

For the event, students and Bixby High School staff members will be seated on the field, with guests seated on either side of the stadium.

The majority of each ceremony will be live, yet some portions may be pre-recorded and played via video screen on the field. Y
