BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — At Uncle Vinny’s New York Style Pizzeria, post-it notes on a statue represent a meal. The notes can be exchanged for a free piece of pizza for those without any money.
The notes read, “get a full tummy,” “be kind,” and “have a blessed day.” Each note was written by a different customer at Uncle Vinny’s.
For $2, people can help the pizzeria feed their less fortunate neighbors, once slice at a time. Co-owner Kim Zezima said she saw the need for help in the community.
“I just started noticing more and more of a homeless population in our town,” she said. The restaurant, like the name implies, serves New York style pizza, sandwiches, and other favorites on West Kenosha in Broken Arrow.
The owners, Zezima and her son Lawrence, says it feels good to give back to the community.
“The community is what supports us, so I think it’s really important to give back any chance we get,” said Lawrence.
So far, more than 50 slices have been given away, thanks to the generosity of their customers.
“I just see a fellow person who might need something, and this is a basic need. It’s food you know. It’s not diamonds,” said Zezima.
