TULSA, Ok — Summer is fast approaching and with it, thousands will crowd Oklahoma’s many lakes. Sometimes the fun turns to danger, and even tragedy, that’s when the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's Lake Patrol steps in.
But with the current budget shortfalls, that might change this year.
“That’s a terrible thing because someone could die” fisherman Anthony Doyle responded.
If they need us, we’re coming Trooper Dwight Durant said. “But it may be a while.” As of now 24 OHP troopers cover 34 Oklahoma lakes and more than 100 smaller bodies of water.
“I don’t know that we’ve ever been stretched this thin,” Durant continued. And with more slashing possible, things may get worse.
“If we have to take a 15% budget cut, the number of our lake patrolmen is going to decrease” a concerned Durant pointed out.
“I guess it’s a positive for the boaters out there who are idiots,” A frustrated Doyle began. “But it’s a bad thing for us guys who need the help.”
Durant warns boaters and others using the lake to be extra cautious this year. “Get familiar with the vessel you’re operating and don’t be drinking when you’re operating the vessel,” Durant explained.
As the budget wows worsen, Durant say the department is sometimes forced to assign more than one lake to one trooper.
