Margaritaville and The Gathering Place stand to benefit from constant water in the river.
The best way to do that, according to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, is a series of low-water dams.
Each of them will cost tens of millions of dollars. Project Manager Cynthia Kitchens estimates the cost per dam to be in the $50 to $75 million range.
Kitchens tells KRMG that, despite the cost, the idea is getting closer to reality. Kitchens says, "I think its gaining momentum. It's getting popular support."
The first order of business is a 3-year, $3 million environmental study.
Kitchens estimates that, if funding is available, it will be five or six years before one or more dams are completed.
