New affordable housing complex opens in west Tulsa

River West hopes to draw mixed-income clientele

The Tulsa Housing Authority opened the doors on a new apartment complex in west Tulsa which they hope will change the face of affordable housing.

This first phase of the River West apartments at 23rd and Jackson is open to subsidized housing, but also has some units that will charge market rates.

Tulsa Housing Authority CEO Aaron Darden says the ‘mixed-income’ approach makes for a more vibrant community.

“You’re no longer going to be able to look at this community and say ‘that’s low-income housing,’ because that’s just not going to be true. We have some of the best housing and apartment community in the whole city,” Darden said.

He says the amenities and finishes in the apartments are comparable with any other apartment complex in Tulsa.

When all phases are complete in 2024, the complex will have more than 400 units.
