TULSA — A powerful line of thunderstorms rolled across northeast Oklahoma late Sunday night, apparently spawning multiple small tornadoes, one of which struck a school in Coweta and did significant damage.
That storm in particular led the National Weather Service to issue several tornado warnings as it passed from east to west, south of city of Tulsa, before at least one small twister touched down not far from Coweta High School.
Our KRMG storm tracker saw visible damage to a Conoco gas station across from the high school, but saw little or no damage to the school buildings on that campus.
In the neighborhood just to the west, the story was different.
The Mission Intermediate Grade Center suffered quite a bit of damage, as did several homes and vehicles nearby.
Witnesses told KRMG they thought there may have been more than one small tornado, but the National Weather Service will have to assess the damage before making the official determination on whether there were actually one or more tornadoes on the ground.
Police, emergency management, and fire crews continued to conduct searches for potential victims hours after the storms passed through.
Power outages, streets littered with debris and fallen tree limbs, and downed power lines hampered the search.
So far there have been no reports of serious injuries.
The National Weather Service in Tulsa confirmed the storm that hit Coweta was an EF-1 tornado. Additionally, meteorologists said Beggs was hit by an EF-0 tornado.
