MCALESTER, Okla. — Gov. Kevin Stitt reportedly wants to bring prison rodeos back to Oklahoma, according to the McAlester News-Capital.
The maximum-security prison in McAlester was once considered the nation’s largest prison rodeo before it closed in 2010. Stitt believes bringing back the prison rodeo will generate revenue for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and the state.
The rodeo consists of inmates signing up for events while professionals compete.
The prison’s rodeo arena, which was built in the 1940s, is in desperate need of repairs. The McAlester News-Capital says Stitt will do what he can at the state level to renovate the arena and get the rodeo back and running.
