"Super banana" about to be tested in USA

Gates foundation funding work

Researchers say hundreds of thousands of children die, and the same number goes blind every year because they're deficient in vitamin A.

However, some of the same scientists are ready to test their "super banana" in hopes to eliminating that problem.

AFP reports the bananas are bred to be loaded with alpha and beta carotene. Once in the body, those are converted into vitamin A.

One interesting note, the mega nutrition causes the flesh of the fruit to be more orange than yellow.

Professor James Dale and his team are preparing to send the fruit to the US for six-week trials on humans.

Time reports the results of those trials may be available by the end of 2014.

We know our science will work," Dale proclaimed. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are helping to fund the work.
