TU hires ETSU’s Tre Lamb as new head football coach

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa has a new head football coach. The Golden Hurricane hired East Tennessee State head coach Tre Lamb Sunday.

“Being the head football coach at Tulsa is a responsibility I will not take lightly,” Lamb said. “We are going to compete for championships. Before we do that, I look forward to hiring a staff and building a roster our students and fans will be excited about!

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime. My family and I cannot wait to explore Tulsa and make it our home. Thank you to Justin Moore, President (Brad) Carson and the other distinguished members of the search committee. I am honored to be your coach.”

The 35-year-old Lamb spent one season at ETSU, leading the team to a 7-5 record after the Buccaneers went 3-8 the season before Lamb took over.

Before that, Lamb was the head coach at Gardner-Webb for four seasons. He led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to back-to-back conference championships and FCS playoff appearances.

“We are so excited for Tre and his family to join TU,” Tulsa athletic director Justin Moore said. “He is young, energetic and a proven winner. We feel he is exactly who we need to lead our program and restore a tradition of winning for Tulsa in this new era of college football. I welcome Tre, his wife, Carter, and his children, Olivia James and Drew Nix, to Tulsa.”

Lamb’s hiring comes exactly two weeks after TU fired former head coach Kevin Wilson. Wilson went 7-16 overall and 3-12 in conference play in just short of two seasons as the Golden Hurricane head coach. Wilson was fired before TU played its season finale last month

Tulsa will have an introductory press conference for Lamb on Tuesday at 10 am in the ONEOK Club at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
