OKLAHOMA CITY, OKC — The First Americans Museum (FAM) in Oklahoma City will be hosting the Potato Dance World Championships on Feb 11.
The museum just opened on Sept. 21, 2022, with its mission to preserve and celebrate Native American history.
The Potato Dance is a fun and social tradition, where two people dance with a potato positioned in between both their foreheads. The goal is to keep moving to the music and not to let the potato drop. If it does, those competitors must leave the dance floor. The last couple left with the potato still in place wins!
“In powwows across the nation, this dance is used as a fun filler dance,” said Ginny Underwood the FAM marketing and communications manager. " The event is open to anyone in the community. We’re encouraging anyone to participate.”
FAM will hold the event on Sat. Sept. 11. at the First Family Museum in Oklahoma City. Dancer registration is $10. Anyone 17 and younger enter for free. There will be $100 FAM store gift card prizes for the Best Dressed and the Best Youth Dancers. The Grand Champions will receive a $250 FAM store gift card.
James and Jamie Yellowfish were the 2022 Grand Champions.
The special celebrity judge is actor Lane Factor of Reservation Dogs.
