Murder conviction of former Oklahoma City police officer upheld

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — A second-degree murder conviction was upheld for a former Oklahoma City police officer who fatally shot a man who was threatening to set himself on fire.

Thursday, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals rejected 25 claims by former Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Keith Sweeney.

Sweeney was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting 29-year-old Dustin Pigeon in 2017.

Prosecutors say Sweeney shot Pigeon after another officer fired a bean bag. Two officers who were at the scene testified that Pigeon posed no threat. Sweeney claimed he believed Pigeon was holding a knife.

Sweeney was later charged with several counts of possessing child pornography in July 2021. Court documents revealed Sweeney allegedly bought, possessed or procured child porn on or between Dec. 15, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2020.

A news release at the time from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said a cybercrimes investigator told the sheriff’s office that Sweeney received and sent pictures of child pornography while using the Marshall County Detention Center’s Wi-Fi.

It was discovered that that a former Marshall Jail administrator gave Sweeney an iPad to use that allowed him to access the Wi-Fi and he was able to remotely access old files and share them

That case is still pending.
