Renovations of Owasso’s Funtastic Island nearing completion

OWASSO, Okla. — Contractors are working on the finishing touches for the park renovation project, Funtastic Island in Owasso.

The northern part of the sports park off 116th Street closed in Aug. 2021 for the renovations. The upgrades include new playground equipment, synthetic turf, shade structures, a splash pad and expanded parking lot, according to Owasso’s Recreation and Culture Department.

“It’s such an icon here in the city. We decided to make it actual islands so when you come you will see blue and green patches,” Larry Langford, Director of Owasso’s Recreation and Culture Department, explained. “So it really is Funtastic Island!”

The City says after 16 years of use the popular recreation area needed a revamp.

“Instead of us trying to piece it back together, we felt it was time for an overhaul,” says Langford.

Vision 2025 money paid for the upgrades.

The plan was made with both children and parent in mind.

“We made sure there was plenty of shade area and seating. Plenty of areas for parents as well,” Langford says.

Funtastic Island was originally projected to open in Feb. 2022. The City says while things have taken longer, they feel confident the renovation will be worth the wait. The official open date is May 21.
