UPDATE: Chili Bowl driver improving after crashing during race

TULSA, Okla. — UPDATE: Torgerson was taken to Saint Francis following last night’s crash for observation. He has no broken bones and has passed several cognitive tests.

A CT test revealed some blood on his brain, so he remains in the hospital for monitoring.

A racer was hospitalized after a crash at the Chili Bowl Nationals, held in midtown Tulsa.

According to a Chili Bowl Nationals press release, Ashton Torgerson, from Oregon, was taken to a Tulsa hospital following an accident during Wednesday’s preliminary feature event.

Fox News said Torgerson’s car flipped several times and his body was ejected from the race car.

Torgerson, just 16 years old according to his racing website, was alert and communicating with track officers before being transported to the hospital.

The press release also said the Torgerson family provided an update on Facebook, stating that Ashton is “alert and talking.”

The family’s update also provided thanks for the outpour of support.
