TULSA, Okla. — A south Tulsa church has changed its name.

Asbury church, formerly “Asbury United Methodist Church” has officially detached itself from the United Methodist Denomination.

Because of the slow and steady drift of The United Methodist Church from their historic Christian mission, we have begun the process of disaffiliating from the denomination, the church said on it’s website.

“We do not know where or when we will affiliate with a new denomination,” the church said. “Currently, our main focus is protecting the assets and interests of Asbury and fully disaffiliating from the UMC. One likely future will be as part of a renewed Methodist movement in a future denomination known as the Global Methodist Church.”
