BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Broken Arrow reopened Nienhuis Skate Park Wednesday showing off new features and a much larger track.
This has been a six month work in progress with the park, near East 51st St. South and South 177th East Ave., shutting down in May for reconstruction.
The park nearly doubled in size in that time, going from just 16,717 square feet to 30,452. What makes this $758,400 project even cooler is that the skaters actually helped with the design, giving their opinions through surveys and public meetings.
“[Skate parks] serve as a gathering place for enthusiastic athletes, both young and old, to meet and to share experiences. There’s no doubt in my mind that our facility will be fully utilized,” said City Manager Michael Spurgeon.
Wednesday was already proof of that with people on scooters, bikes, skates and skateboards already out testing out the park’s ramps just moments after the ribbon was cut.
