Community supports McLain High School students returning to class

Video: Community welcomes McLain High School students back to class

TULSA, Okla. — People gathered outside McLain High School to welcome students back to the classroom Thursday morning, nearly a week after a student was killed and three other people were injured in a shooting at the school’s homecoming game.

Terron Yarbrough, 17, was killed in the shooting on Friday night. Another 17-year-old was injured, as well as two others who are not students.

Several people gathered outside of the school holding up signs with messages of support as music played, in support of the students’ return.

Organizers with the Terence Crutcher Foundation sent out a release asking people to show up outside of the school’s front entrance at 7:30 Thursday, and bring a sign to demonstrate your commitment to their wellbeing.

“We thought it was important for the community to show up and surround them with some love, with some high fives, with some fist bumps to let them know that they are not alone,” said Tiffany Crutcher, founder of the Terence Crutcher Foundation. “It just brought a tear to my eyes because it’s going to take all of us coming together. We believe that whenever there’s a community issue, it requires a community response.”

Youth advocates with the Tulsa chapter of 100 Black Men told FOX23 Wednesday they wanted everyone to come out and support the students as they walked in.

”We’re going to go forward, and we’re going to go as a team,” said 100 Black Men Vice President Larry Harris. “We’re going to see what these kids need, and we’re going to be there for them.”

”We’ve had tragedy. This is a tragic moment, but this is not the only moment that north Tulsa has,” said David Harris, president of 100 Black Men.

Class began at 8 a.m. Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist said there will be enhanced security measures at McLain throughout the day to make sure the return goes smoothly.
