Former WPX Energy building opens in downtown Tulsa mostly vacant

TULSA, Okla. — A three-year construction project that had more than bump along the way had its official ribbon cutting ceremony today.

The $100 million building was meant to become WPX Energy headquarters and bring in more than 200 jobs this year to Tulsa. In 2020,however, WPX merged with Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy to avoid bankruptcy, meaning they no longer needed the 12-story tower downtown.

The building sits just across the street from Guthrie Green downtown, near MLK and Cameron. It was where the Spaghetti Warehouse once stood for years.

While losing the jobs to Oklahoma City was not ideal, the next problem the city faced was the potential of having a massive, partially constructed building in the heart of downtown.

Mayor Bynum, at the time, said he was assured by WPX leadership that the building would be completed.

Fast forward and Monday was that day.

Mayor Bynum spoke at the ribbon cutting acknowledging the empty office space but spinning it as an opportunity.

“An amazing building that is completed. It is an economic development asset as they try to bring more jobs to Tulsa to have a ready-made facility,” Mayor Bynum said. “It is a great tool for Tulsa.”

The building includes 245,000 sq. ft. of office space, 15,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, nearly 700 attached covered parking spaces and 24/7 security. Space is available for lease.

Law firm Crowe and Dunlevy moved into the new building over the weekend. Several office spaces are still up for lease.
